Description
Schwanhelt Bulge, often referred to as Captain Bulge, is the commander of the Sirius Platoon within the Space Defense Force. He assumes this role following a profound act of sacrifice: his predecessor, Wataru Yuuki, is killed while protecting the crew and passengers of the Galaxy Railways from an invading force. In his final moments, Wataru personally appoints Bulge as the new captain of the platoon's flagship combat train, the Big One.

As a leader, Bulge is characterized by a deep sense of duty and a protective nature. He places the safety and welfare of his crew above all else, including his own career and personal safety. This dedication extends to his interpersonal relationships, where he is viewed by his subordinates as a paternal figure, providing guidance and stability in the face of constant danger. His serious commitment to his role is further highlighted by a personal sacrifice from his past; he once gave up a romantic relationship to protect those he cared for, and his subsequent attempts to reconnect with this person are never successful.

Throughout the series, Captain Bulge's strong moral compass defines his actions, even when they conflict with direct orders. In a critical incident, he deliberately disobeys a command from an officer in the secret intelligence division, choosing instead to rescue imperiled crew members rather than prioritizing the repair of the Big One. The situation escalates, culminating in Bulge punching the general and rendering him unconscious. This act of defiance, born from his unwavering commitment to his men, leads directly to his court-martial. He is stripped of his captaincy, and the Sirius Platoon is officially disbanded.

However, Bulge is also a shrewd and strategic thinker. Foreseeing the political repercussions of his insubordination, he initiates a gambit before his dismissal. He secretly entrusts a critical piece of technology, the Cosmo matrix, to the Big One's mechanics, instructing them to study it and integrate it into the train's weapons system. When the intelligence bureau demands the matrix, the mechanics provide a fake, allowing the real work to continue. As a result, the Big One is officially impounded but is secretly repaired and upgraded while in custody. This foresight proves vital when the commander of the Galaxy Railways later gives Bulge unofficial permission to reassemble his platoon and take action during the organization's greatest crisis, ensuring the Big One is ready for the final battle.
