Description
Commander Sazabi is a primary antagonist and a high-ranking executive of the Dark Axis, serving as the commander of the invasion force targeting the futuristic city of Neotopia. His origins lie within the Dark Axis as a Mobile Citizen developed for combat and leadership.
His personality is defined by ruthless efficiency and冷酷 (reikoku), or冷酷 cruelty. As a commander, he is highly capable and strategic, but he views his subordinates not as allies, but as disposable tools for achieving his objectives. He has no tolerance for failure or incompetence; those who displease him are met with swift and fatal punishment, often executed personally as a public example. In one instance, he vaporized his own officer, Doga Grey, for failing to stop a human child, and on another occasion, he destroyed several of his own Doga Bomber units simply to demonstrate his absolute disdain for them. His personal philosophy rejects the very concept of friendship or camaraderie, stating that the world is divided only into "the rulers and the ruled".
Commander Sazabi's primary motivation is the conquest of Neotopia on behalf of the Dark Axis. He is driven by a desire for domination and sees the subjugation of others as the sole purpose of power. He is also deeply cynical, believing that his enemies operate from the same selfish principles. This is demonstrated when he attempts to demoralize his foes by alleging that Captain Gundam's Soul Drive is merely a tool for controlling all robots, making the Dark Axis and Neotopia no different from one another.
His role in the story is that of the major field commander opposing the Gundam Force during the Neotopia arc. Initially commanding from the shadows aboard his flagship, the Magna Musai, he grows frustrated with the repeated failures of his vanguard, the trio of Zapper Zaku, Grappler Gouf, and Destroyer Dom. Abandoning them as expendable decoys, he takes personal command of the final assault on Neotopia. His most significant act is hacking and stealing Captain Gundam's Soul Drive, the source of his life and power, which paralyzes the hero and successfully allows Sazabi to conquer the city. He also uses a red-colored Zako Soldier body as a disguise to lead from the front, calling himself Zako Red.
Commander Sazabi's key relationships are largely antagonistic or utilitarian. He is the direct superior of the three bumbling Dark Axis soldiers, whom he holds in contempt for their incompetence. His primary adversary is Captain Gundam, whose power and bond with his human partner Shute he both seeks to exploit and fundamentally misunderstands. Professor Gerbera is his superior within the Dark Axis, though Sazabi is depicted as a loyal, if independent, officer.
Throughout his confrontation with the Gundam Force, Commander Sazabi shows little to no personal development. He remains steadfast in his nihilistic worldview until his final moments. Even in defeat, when his own chest is cracked open to reveal that he too possesses a Soul Drive, he does not repent. Instead, he uses this revelation to try and persuade Captain Gundam that they are kindred spirits, mechanical beings who exist to dominate, and he attempts to recruit him to the Dark Axis. He is ultimately destroyed by Captain Gundam, who rejects his twisted logic with the declaration that there is a right way to seek companionship.
In terms of abilities, Commander Sazabi is an exceptionally powerful mobile warrior. He stands at a height of 244.33 centimeters and weighs 272.95 kilograms. His arsenal is extensive, featuring a pair of funnel beam cannons stored on his back that can be used for both offensive all-range attacks and defensive purposes. He has multiple hidden laser cannons in his chest and shoulder binders, and a powerful MEGA Cannon is created when all three are fired simultaneously. For close combat, he wields two beam swords and can generate an energy shield. His helmet is also equipped with numerous small lasers. To complete his formidable arsenal, he can transform into a high-speed flight mode, generating a black I-field to perform a devastating ramming attack.
