Description
Apolo is a deity who appears as a primary antagonist in the animated film Saint Seiya Tenkai-hen ~Overture~. He is based on the Greek mythological figure of the same name and is portrayed as the god of the Sun, as well as the older brother of the goddesses Artemis and Athena. In the narrative of the Tenkai-hen prologue, Apolo acts as the final arbiter of divine justice, appearing after the events involving his sister Artemis to pass judgment on humanity and his sister Athena.
In terms of appearance, Apolo is depicted as a tall god, standing over 1.90 meters, with an imposing and ethereal presence. He has cold, sapphire blue eyes that contrast sharply with his curly red hair, which is said to move perpetually as if it were made of burning flames. He wears a golden tiara that symbolizes the sun and is completely covered by a long, white tunic.
His personality is characterized as serious, dry, and devoid of emotional attachments. He embodies the concept of a perfect, absolute being who is not governed by feelings such as love or mercy. Apolo adheres to the ancient divine principle that humans must be subjugated to forces they cannot understand, and he believes that questioning a deity is an unforgivable act, as a perfect being cannot be put on trial. He shows little consideration for others, including his sister Artemis, and does not hesitate to condemn Athena, viewing her as a deity who has become too human and, in his eyes, even more insignificant than mortals. Despite this ruthlessness, he is not framed as a purely evil character but rather as an implacable and uncompromising divine force.
Apolo's motivations stem from a desire to uphold the absolute sovereignty of the gods and punish those who defy it. He views humanity's repeated challenges against deities like Poseidon and Hades as an unforgivable sin that warrants total annihilation. When he appears, he decides that Athena is no longer worthy of being a goddess for siding with humans and sentences both her and her Saints to death. His role in the story is that of an unstoppable judge and executioner, possessing power so immense that even Athena admits there is no hope of defeating him. He ultimately decides to erase the memories of Seiya and Saori (Athena) as a form of judgment, resetting their relationship and removing their identities as Saint and Goddess.
Key relationships include his bond with his sisters, Artemis and Athena, though he demonstrates little familial warmth. He is the older brother of both, a departure from some mythological accounts where he is younger or a twin. He interacts with the protagonist Pegasus Seiya, viewing him as the embodiment of human insolence. Despite this, Seiya's determination to leave a mark proving humanity's existence ultimately leads to a subtle shift in Apolo's perspective, though not without severe consequences. In spin-off works like Episode G, Apolo is also mentioned as having granted blessings to mortals such as the Trojan hero Hector, giving his body the gift of invulnerability.
Regarding his development within the film, Apolo remains largely static as an overwhelming, near-absolute force. However, the ambiguous ending suggests a slight change in his stance. After Seiya manages to scratch his face, a feat that should be impossible for a mortal, Apolo seems to acknowledge the indomitable will of humanity. Instead of complete destruction, he spares them but inflicts a different punishment: erasing their memories of each other. This act serves both as a penalty and a form of mercy, freeing them from the cycle of war.
Apolo's notable abilities are vast, befitting an Olympian god of his rank. He has complete mastery over his cosmos, which is said to far surpass that of any human or even gods like Poseidon and Hades. He can disintegrate matter and techniques, as demonstrated when he effortlessly nullified Seiya's Pegasus Suisei Ken. He can create small, sun-like spheres of energy that have the power to completely disintegrate his enemies. He also possesses the ability to erase the memories of both mortals and deities, a power he uses to reset Seiya and Athena's relationship. Furthermore, as a god, he is immortal and has existed since the mythological age. In the official setting for the film, he is described as the strongest god in the universe and the greatest enemy the Saints have ever faced.
