Description
Kazuna Takashiro is the central protagonist of the story and the younger brother of Chizuna Takashiro. For most of his childhood, he was unaware of his family’s dark secret. After the death of his mother, Kazuna was sent away to live with a couple who are close friends of his father. His father requested that he be raised as normally as possible since he initially showed no visible symptoms, leading to Kazuna being led to believe that his sister and father had simply abandoned him. He grows up as a seemingly average high school student who is not particularly active with his studies, enjoying his quiet life and spending time with a classmate named Yaegashi, an aspiring artist for whom he occasionally models.
Kazuna’s life is upended when the hereditary curse of the Takashiro family manifests within him. This condition, which resembles vampirism, creates an unstoppable craving for human blood. He begins to experience disturbing nightmares and loses control at the sight of blood, even triggering a fainting spell when Yaegashi cuts her finger on a canvas. Driven by these strange urges, he returns to his abandoned family home where he reunites with his older sister, Chizuna. She reveals the truth about their lineage: they both suffer from a disease that only human blood can satisfy, a condition that led to their mother's death and their father's eventual suicide.
As his symptoms become more frequent and severe, Kazuna’s personality shifts from that of a passive student to a deeply conflicted and isolated individual. His primary motivation becomes a desperate need to protect those around him from his own violent urges. He deliberately severs ties with his ordinary life, pushing Yaegashi away after a terrifying dream in which he kills her for her blood, and eventually abandons school entirely. He turns to Chizuna as the only person who can truly understand his suffering, leading him to become a recluse and live with her in their family home.
His key relationships define his tragic arc. The bond with his sister, Chizuna, evolves from estrangement to a deep, codependent reliance. As they struggle together against their fate, their relationship takes on intense and ambiguous undertones that grow beyond that of a normal sibling connection. Chizuna becomes both his caretaker and his fellow prisoner in the curse, providing him with medicine to stave off the symptoms and a lethal pill to use as an escape if the suffering becomes unbearable. In contrast, his relationship with Yaegashi represents the normal life he must forsake to keep her safe.
Kazuna’s development is defined by his surrender to the family curse. He goes from being an ignorant outsider to someone who fully accepts his grim fate. He does not possess supernatural strength or speed like a traditional vampire; rather, his "ability" is purely the curse itself, which grants him nothing but an insatiable thirst that isolates him from humanity. In his final actions, he chooses not to fight the disease but to embrace its ultimate consequence, attempting suicide alongside his sister rather than face the world alone. The outcome of this choice varies; in the anime adaptation, he dies, while in the original manga, he survives the suicide attempt but suffers from complete amnesia, losing all memories of the previous year and his sister.
