Description
Harlem is a prominent character from the sequel anime series Papuwa, recognized as a member of the Gamma Gang and the leader of its Special Battle Unit. He is one of the younger brothers of Magic, the organization's supreme commander, and the older twin brother of Service. In the original timeline, both Harlem and his twin are forty-three years old.
In terms of personality, Harlem is depicted as rough, short-tempered, and粗暴. He is an extreme miser, notorious for cutting his subordinates' wages and stealing their money to fuel a severe gambling addiction, often wasting large sums on horse racing. Despite his aggressive exterior, he has a deep-seated care for his family, particularly his twin brother Service, though he is often unable to express this affection straightforwardly, behaving in a manner akin to a tsundere. He is also shown to be surprisingly sensitive to the situations of those around him, looking out for former team members like Liquid even after their professional relationship has ended.
Harlem's primary motivations are largely selfish, driven by a desire for money and gambling. However, a significant part of his character revolves around his complex relationship with his brother Service. Their relationship became strained due to differing perspectives on their comrade Luzar. Harlem believes Service has always been clever, avoiding the harsher realities and brutal destinies of their clan rather than confronting them head-on. His role in the story frequently places him as an antagonist or a disruptive force, leading his unit to the island to locate Kotaro, whom he initially plans to kidnap. After his airship is destroyed by the island's strange creatures, he and his subordinates are forced to live on Papuwa Island, where his role shifts toward reluctant integration with the main cast.
Harlem's key relationships are defined by family and former loyalties. As the uncle of Shintaro and Kotaro, his actions are influenced by family obligations, though he often comes into conflict with the new generation's leadership. His relationship with Service is the most central, marked by years of misunderstanding and unresolved feelings about Luzar's death. His treatment of his subordinates, including Marker, Rod, and G, is harsh, as he regularly underpays them, but he also maintains a level of authority over them as their unit leader. His history with Liquid is notable; Liquid worked under Harlem and remembers the period as a time of torture and trauma, though Harlem later shows pride in Liquid's growth and anger when others harm him.
Regarding his development, a significant change occurs upon arriving at Papuwa Island. Witnessing Kotaro living happily and carefree with Papuwa and the others leads Harlem to reconsider his own approach, realizing he was never able to provide such a joyful, age-appropriate childhood for those under his care. While his miserly tendencies and gambling habits remain, he demonstrates a capacity for reflection and a hidden protective nature. It is also revealed that from a young age, Harlem dreamed of becoming a soldier like his father, and at sixteen he went to the battlefield instead of attending the Gamma Gang's military academy.
In terms of notable abilities, Harlem possesses great fighting power and is a capable leader of his elite unit. Like other members of his family, he possesses a hisekigan, a mystical stone eye that grants him unique power. His physical strength and combat skills are sufficient to command the respect and fear of his subordinates, even as they complain about his financial exploitation.
