Description
Harem is a character introduced in the sequel pilot film and drama CDs of the series, as he does not appear in the original anime. He is known for having a rough and violent temperament, though this harsh exterior conceals a deep-seated care for his younger brother. A notable aspect of his personality is his extreme greed, as he is a severe money-grubber who has been known to cut his subordinates’ salaries to fund his own gambling habits.
Harem is the twin brother of a character named Service. In their childhood, the brothers were close, but their relationship became strained due to differing views on the character Loser. The death of Loser made their rift permanent. Harem harbors a complex view of his brother, believing Service has always been clever and efficient in how he lives. He thinks Service tends to look away from unpleasant truths, such as the inherent cruelty of their family or the painful struggles against their clan's destiny, choosing not to confront them directly.
Despite their fractured relationship and his harsh words, Harem has not lost his affection for Service. He is described as a tsundere character, one who cannot be honest about his true feelings. This dedication to family is a powerful motivator. He once begged on his knees, shedding tears and throwing away his pride and dignity, to ensure Loser did not reveal a painful truth to Service. His intense hostility towards the Red Clan, which he blames for creating the circumstances that led to Loser's rampage and death, as well as for the loss of Service’s right eye, is also rooted in this familial love, even if it borders on a grudge.
In the sequel story Papuwa, set four years later, Harem has left the Gamma Corps due to a conflict with the new leader, Shintaro. Upon learning that Kotaro has gone missing on Papuwa Island, he arrives with his subordinates, ostensibly to kidnap him. However, witnessing Kotaro living happily on the island, showing emotions and expressions appropriate for a child that Harem feels he could never provide as a family, makes him reconsider his actions. After his subordinates’ airship is destroyed by the island’s inhabitants, he has no choice but to begin living on Papuwa Island.
While living there, he continues to interact with his former subordinate, Liquid. He often leads his men to mooch meals from Liquid and subjects him to torture-like bullying that brings back traumatic memories, making him a source of hardship. Despite this, Harem also occasionally offers guidance, expresses joy at Liquid’s growth, and displays anger when Shintaro resorts to violence against Liquid. It is also revealed that from a young age, Harem dreamed of becoming a military man like his father, and he went to the battlefield at sixteen without attending the Gamma Corps’ military academy. His chaotic and greedy behavior remains a constant, having once gambled away all his subordinates’ salaries on horse races.
