Description
Kitori Palvanaff is a character created specifically for the 2004 television remake of Area 88, where she serves as the only female freelance pilot operating out of the mercenary airbase. Her background is deeply rooted in the fictional kingdom of Asran, as she is the only daughter of the King of Asran and a cousin of Saki Vashtal, the base's commanding officer. It is this royal connection that leads to her assignment at Area 88.
In terms of personality, Kitori is portrayed as a self-confident and competitive individual who does not seek or receive special treatment because of her gender. She lives and fights alongside the male pilots on the base's own harsh terms, quickly establishing herself as one of its top fighters. Her competitive nature is evident in her interactions with others; she develops a fondness for teasing Kim Aba, the youngest pilot in the Asranian air force, and later takes a liking to the Japanese photojournalist Makoto Shinjou, finding him friendly. Regarding the protagonist Shin Kazama, she is mystified by his cold and distant personality, though the two remain on good terms.
Kitori's motivations are largely tied to her identity as a royal and a professional soldier. Rather than being a reluctant conscript like some of her peers, she appears to have been sent to the base to prove herself or serve her kingdom, fighting for the government forces with a sense of pride and duty. Her role in the story is primarily that of a skilled peer and rival to the other aces, adding a unique dynamic to the group of freelancers. Notably, she acts as a bridge between the pilots and the command structure due to her family ties to Saki Vashtal.
While the 2004 anime series does not fully explore her development due to its discontinuation, her character is defined by her high level of skill. According to in-series information, her shooting down record is the third highest at Area 88, a testament to her abilities as she flies a French-built Mirage F1 fighter jet, which sports a personal emblem of three red arrows against a red bow. It is important to distinguish Kitori from her counterpart in the original manga, where a similar character named Seilane Balnock exists. Unlike Kitori, Seilane has a different storyline and ultimately dies in the final battle alongside the pilot Mickey Simon.
