Description
Erii Aizawa is a character who appears exclusively in the anime film Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. She is a young woman who works as a volunteer and teacher at the Star Children Academy, the orphanage where the protagonist Seiya and his sister Seika grew up. Having lost her parents at an early age, Erii found a sense of purpose and belonging at the orphanage, choosing to remain there as an adult to help care for the children alongside her friend and coworker, Miho. She is described as having a slender build, fair skin, and long blonde hair, which she typically wears pinned up. Her usual attire consists of a green dress with a white apron, reflecting her role at the orphanage.
In terms of personality, Erii is depicted as a peaceful, kind-hearted, and optimistic individual. Despite the loneliness of being orphaned, she channels her experiences into nurturing the children in her care, avoiding self-pity and instead finding comfort in her work. She is somewhat curious, which inadvertently leads her to a fateful discovery. A significant aspect of her character is her immediate and strong romantic attraction to Hyōga of Cygnus, one of the Bronze Saints. This attraction begins when Hyōga saves her and a young child from being hit by a car. Following this incident, she becomes noticeably distracted and clumsy whenever Hyōga is near, her feelings becoming so apparent that even the children at the orphanage tease her about it. Her affection for Hyōga continues to grow as they spend time together, sharing conversations and finding a connection in their similar backgrounds of having no family.
The central motivation for Erii as a character is not active but rather passive, as she is primarily a vessel. Her role in the story is to be the human host for the main antagonist, Eris, the Goddess of Discord. It is explained that Erii was born under the same astral configuration or possesses a similar spiritual wavelength as the evil goddess, making her uniquely vulnerable to Eris's control. The plot is set in motion when she and Hyōga are watching the stars together. A falling star, which is actually the Comet Repulse carrying the Golden Apple, appears. Erii makes a wish on it, but the apple lands on Earth, and its malevolent power calls out to her. Drawn by an unseen force, Erii follows the call to a beach, finds the Golden Apple inside a ruined ship, and upon touching it, her body is immediately possessed by the spirit of Eris. From that point, Eris uses Erii's body to kidnap Saori Kido, who is the reincarnation of the goddess Athena, and holds her hostage to drain her life force and achieve a complete resurrection.
Erii's most significant relationship is with Hyōga of Cygnus. Their bond is established on mutual affection and a sense of understanding, and it is this connection that Eris later exploits to psychologically torment Hyōga during their battle. Her other important relationships include her close friendship with Miho, with whom she shares a deep history and a common goal of caring for the orphanage children, and her bond with the children themselves, for whom she feels a strong sense of responsibility. Her relationship with Eris is entirely parasitic and non-consensual; she is simply a tool for the goddess to use and discard. During most of the story's conflict, Erii is not consciously present, as Eris is in full control of her body. She is unaware of the events that transpire while she is possessed. Her character development is limited, as she exists mainly as a catalyst for the plot and a damsel in distress. Her arc concludes when the Bronze Saints defeat Eris, and the goddess's spirit abandons her body. After the battle, Hyōga carries the unconscious Erii out of the collapsing temple, and she is last seen safely in his arms alongside the other Saints and Athena. As a human with no combat training, Erii herself possesses no notable abilities or combat skills. The powers demonstrated while she is possessed belong entirely to the goddess Eris, who wields a spear and can command the resurrected Ghost Saints. Erii's only "ability" within the narrative is her unwitting suitability to serve as a vessel for a malevolent deity.
