Description
Eris is the goddess of Discord and the main antagonist of the 1987 animated film. She is an ancient divine being who returns to the mortal world after a long period of exile, driven by a deep-seated grudge against her eternal rival, the goddess Athena. Her primary motivation is revenge against Athena, who in the past drained Eris of her life energy, reducing her to a weakened, youthful state. To fully recover her power and exact her vengeance, Eris seeks to steal Athena’s life force for herself.

In order to manifest in the world, Eris requires a human host. She achieves this by using the legendary golden apple, an artifact associated with her mythological role as a catalyst for strife. A young woman named Eri, a kind-hearted caretaker at the Star Children Academy, discovers the golden apple after it falls to Earth as a shooting star. The apple’s power tempts and then possesses Eri, allowing Eris to take control of her body. As the goddess, she sheds her host’s initial identity, donning a form that combines elements of divine and martial attire. Her appearance features long, light blue hair with dark flame-like tips, and her eyes resemble a chaotic nebula. She wears a revealing golden garment that functions as a set of armor.

Eris’s role in the story is to sow chaos and achieve world domination by eliminating Athena. To accomplish this, she orchestrates the kidnapping of Saori Kido, the earthly incarnation of Athena. She traps her rival by placing the golden apple before her, where it acts as a device to slowly drain her life energy. Once Athena’s power is fully absorbed, Eris plans to transfer herself into Athena’s body, abandoning her current vessel for a more suitable divine form.

As the commander of her own dark forces, Eris resurrects five deceased Saints who bear grudges or regrets from their past lives. Known collectively as the Ghost Five, these warriors—Sagitta Maya, Lyra Orpheus, Southern Cross Khristos, Scutum Jan, and Orion Jäger—are implied to have been Silver Saints in their former lives, though their strength as Ghost Saints is said to surpass that rank. Eris demonstrates a pragmatic and ruthless nature in her leadership, ultimately viewing her followers as disposable tools. During a battle, when the Ghost Saint Khristos proves to be a hindrance, she fatally pierces him with a spear from behind without hesitation, using the opportunity to also wound her enemy, Cygnus Hyoga. Her key relationship is with the protagonist Pegasus Seiya, who becomes the primary obstacle to her plans after she captures Athena. Her antagonist dynamic with Hyoga is more personal, as he had formed an emotional connection with Eri, the woman she possesses.

Eris wields considerable power derived from chaos and her divine authority. Beyond her control over the golden apple, she is depicted wielding a trident in combat, a weapon befitting her status as a warring deity. She commands the Ghost Five and maintains a dark sanctuary that serves as her fortress. However, her plans are ultimately undone when Seiya, empowered by the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, uses its golden arrow to shatter the golden apple. This act severs the link draining Athena’s life and frees Eri from Eris’s control, banishing the goddess of Discord once again. Her development throughout the narrative is minimal, as she remains a single-minded agent of chaos whose primary focus is the fulfillment of her vengeful scheme. In a later film, she appears briefly as a spiritual ally summoned by the fallen angel Lucifer, serving as one of several divine entities sent to aid him before being banished to the Underworld following his defeat.
