Description
Jan, also known as Ecu or by the title Scutum Jan, is a character from the animated film Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. He is a male warrior with distinctive physical features, including purple eyes and long blue hair that reaches past his hips. Jan stands approximately 175 centimeters tall and has a slim build, weighing around 60 kilograms. His appearance is further characterized by his armor, which includes a helmet and a prominent shield.

In terms of background, Jan is classified as a Silver Saint, a rank of warriors who originally served the goddess Athena. However, at some point before the events of the film, Jan died. The circumstances of his death are described as being in vain, and he was said to be restless in his grave. This restlessness is a key aspect of his personality: a straightforward, impulsive, and eager nature that led him to accept an offer from the antagonist, the evil goddess Eris. She revived him and gave him a new body, making him a member of her elite force known as the Ghost Five. His allegiance therefore shifts from Athena to Eris as a revived warrior.

Jan's primary motivation is the chance to fight again. His restless spirit and headstrong personality made him a willing participant in Eris's plan to bring chaos to the world. He is not driven by a grand philosophical alignment with Eris's goals, but rather by the simple desire for combat and to settle the unrest of his spirit. In the story, he serves as one of the five Ghost Saints who act as direct guardians for Eris. The Saints Seiya, Shiryu, Hyoga, Shun, and Ikki must defeat the Ghost Five before they can confront the evil goddess herself. Jan is specifically paired in battle against Dragon Shiryu.

The relationship between Jan and Shiryu is the most significant interaction for his character. Their fight is notable because Jan initially has a clear tactical advantage. The Cloth he wears, the Scutum or Shield Cloth, possesses a shield that is stronger than the Dragon Shield, which is the signature defensive weapon of Shiryu's Dragon Cloth. Jan is confident and manages to defeat Shiryu within the first minute of their confrontation. However, his straightforward and jump-into-action personality leads to a critical flaw: he underestimates his opponent. As Shiryu gathers all of his Cosmo, the life energy of a Saint, into a single, decisive attack, Jan is quickly overpowered and defeated.

In terms of development, Jan remains a static character, defined by his overconfidence and love for battle. His narrative purpose is to provide a direct physical challenge for Shiryu, testing the Dragon Saint's resolve and power. His defeat demonstrates the classic trope that raw power and tactical advantage can be overcome by a fighter's will and the ability to unleash one's full potential in a single moment.

Jan possesses notable abilities befitting a Silver Saint. He is a superhuman fighter with enhanced senses, the ability to fly, and mastery of combat with his shield. His signature technique is called Bone Crush Screw. To perform this attack, Jan leaps high into the air and spins his body rapidly, accelerating before delivering a powerful kick to his opponent. Defensively, his Scutum Cloth provides immense durability; it was strong enough to withstand direct attacks from Dragon Shiryu until Shiryu concentrated all his power. His overall power is considered to be at a national level, and his speed is supersonic to hypersonic, which is consistent with warriors of his rank.
