Description
Jagger di Orion, known in Japanese as Orion no Jagā, is a central antagonist from the 1987 anime film Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. Before his death, Jagger was a highly esteemed Silver Saint who served the goddess Athena. His prowess in battle was so renowned during his own era that he was widely hailed as the strongest of all Silver Saints and a true hero. He fought and died in an ancient Holy War, but his soul did not find peace. Instead of being remembered for his sacrifice, Jagger’s name and deeds were gradually forgotten by the passage of time.
It is this deep-seated resentment born from oblivion that defines his character. When the evil goddess Eris is revived in the modern age, she seeks out the souls of powerful, fallen warriors who harbor bitterness. Jagger, feeling abandoned and unappreciated by the very world he gave his life to protect, readily accepts her offer to return from the dead. He becomes a Ghost Saint, the leader of the resurrected warriors who serve Eris. Now clad in his Orion Cloth once more, he dedicates his new existence to serving the goddess of discord, seeking to prove his power and exact a form of revenge for his lonely death.
Within the story, Jagger functions as the primary enforcer and the most formidable obstacle standing between the Bronze Saints and their kidnapped goddess, Athena. While the other Ghost Saints are defeated relatively quickly, Jagger remains as Eris’s ultimate guardian, her personal bodyguard and the final line of defense. His role is not just a physical threat but a thematic one, acting as a dark mirror to the protagonists. Jagger represents what a Saint could become if consumed by pride and a sense of betrayal, whereas the young Bronze Saints fight for camaraderie and justice without any expectation of reward or recognition.
His key relationships are primarily adversarial, most notably with the Phoenix Ikki. Their fight is a brutal and closely matched battle where Jagger’s raw power initially overcomes Ikki’s ferocity. In their confrontation, Jagger is confronted with the bonds of friendship that unite Athena’s current Saints, a concept that has become alien to his embittered heart. This encounter plants a seed of doubt, forcing him to momentarily reconsider the emptiness of his vendetta. His relationship with Eris is purely transactional; she is the benefactor who offers him a second chance at battle, and he is her ultimate weapon, carrying out her orders without question.
In terms of development, Jagger undergoes a significant, if brief, arc that leads to his final redemption. Initially, he dismisses his fallen Ghost Saint allies as mere losers, showing his contempt for weakness. He is utterly convinced of his own superiority and the righteousness of his grudge. However, after being defeated by Seiya, who dons the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, Jagger has a moment of clarity. He acknowledges that he was wrong; his path of resentment has led to his final defeat. In his dying moments, he casts aside his bitterness and bestows the highest compliment upon his victors, admitting that Seiya and his companions are the true Saints, worthy of Athena. This shift from a resentful, forgotten warrior to a noble figure who dies with his honor restored is the cornerstone of his character.
Jagger possesses immense physical strength and fighting skill that easily surpasses standard Silver Saints, placing him on a level comparable to the mightiest warriors. His signature and most devastating technique is the Megaton Meteor Crash. To perform this attack, Jagger leaps into the air and curls his body into a tight, rotating shell. He then descends like a meteor, focusing all of his cosmo energy into a single, explosive kick directed at his opponent. The power of this strike is so tremendous that it is stated that only the protection of a Gold Cloth can successfully block it. He also demonstrates the ability to generate powerful energy blasts and fight effectively at close range, making him a master of all combat distances.
