Description
Orion Jaguar is a character from the 1987 animated film Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris, with his name sometimes rendered as Orion Jäger or Jaguar of Orion depending on the localization. In life he was a Silver Saint who served the goddess Athena and fought in the Holy Wars of a distant era, and within the film he is described as the most powerful Saint ever to have existed. After his death he was brought back from the world of the dead by the goddess of discord, Eris, as one of the five revived warriors known as the Ghost Five, and he serves as their leader as well as the final guardian standing between Eris and her enemies.
In his lifetime Jaguar was celebrated as the strongest of heroes, but he could not bear the thought of being forgotten as time moved on. That longing is what led him to accept Eris's offer of a new life and to swear allegiance to her. When he first encounters Seiya of Pegasus and the other Bronze Saints, he looks down on them and treats them as unworthy opponents. Beneath this contempt, however, there is a deeper conflict. In his final moments he praises the Bronze Saints as the true defenders of Athena, which suggests that Athena still mattered to him and that what he truly wanted was the chance to prove his worth in battle once more.
His role in the story is that of the last obstacle to Eris's temple. After the other Ghost Saints are defeated one by one, Jaguar waits at the approach to Eris's altar. When the weakened and poisoned Seiya reaches the temple, Jaguar overpowers him with little difficulty. Ikki of Phoenix then steps in, and the two fight on nearly equal terms, trading heavy blows. Jaguar ultimately prevails by countering Ikki's Phoenix technique with his own Megaton Meteor Crash, and he knocks Ikki down again when the Phoenix Saint rises a second time. As Jaguar moves to finish Seiya, the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius arrives and is worn by Seiya, who then blocks Jaguar's attack and responds with the Pegasus Meteor Fist, a blow that takes on the form of a comet. The attack shatters Jaguar's Cloth and brings his second life to an end, but he dies acknowledging the strength and worth of the young Saints who defeated him.
