Description
Minami is a high school student at an all-girls school. Feeling she lacks distinct strengths or aspirations, she worries her life will be unremarkable, like a background character she calls "Villager A." This motivates her search for a unique identity or passion. When a mobile game she regularly plays ends service, it spurs her exploration of new hobbies. While helping an elderly person carry golf clubs to a driving range, she meets Haruka Akane, a part-time worker and skilled amateur golfer with international competition experience. Haruka invites Minami to try golf, sparking her initial interest. Haruka then gives Minami her own used set of golf clubs as encouragement, framing it as a reward for a "perfect 100-point game," solidifying Minami's commitment.
To support her new interest, Minami undertakes part-time work, facilitated by mentor figure Ayaka Hoshimi, a university student and social media influencer. This allows her to afford golf equipment. Visiting a golf store, she develops a strong attachment to a specific utility iron club after testing it, feeling it uniquely suits her. Missing a flash sale on the club, she gains a chance to buy it discounted if she and her friends outperform the store staff in a friendly competition. With Haruka and Ayaka's help, they succeed, and Minami acquires the club, which comes with a penguin-shaped cover symbolizing adaptability and positive transformation, reflecting her evolving identity.
Her skill develops through dedicated practice, guided training with Haruka and Ayaka, and playing rounds. Early struggles occur on a short course with Haruka's patient instruction. During her first full course play, initial disorientation gives way to increasing confidence across holes. Despite new equipment, frustration arises when her performance doesn't immediately improve, highlighting that skill relies more on technique and experience than gear. Haruka and Ayaka reinforce this through tailored training focused on incremental progress. Their mentorship extends beyond technique, emphasizing enjoyment, perseverance, and finding personal meaning, with Ayaka framing golf as an incremental journey where measurable improvement signifies success. Social connections formed through golf, including deepening friendships with Haruka, Ayaka, and classmate Izumi Akina, become integral. Minami's enthusiasm grows, shown by her reluctance to leave the course after a full day and proactively scheduling practice, like visiting the driving range right after school exams. Her motivation evolves from seeking "special uniqueness" to avoid being a background character toward actively embracing golf to become the "protagonist" of her own story, shifting from uncertainty to purposeful engagement.
