Description
Kanon Shibuya is a third-year student at Yuigaoka Girls' High School and leads the school idol group Liella!. Her family operates a Tokyo cafe where she helps her mother prepare specialties like baked apples with cream. Her father works as a translator, and her Spanish grandmother inspires her appreciation for dishes like paella. Kanon owns a pet Eurasian scops owl named Manmaru, who acts as both the cafe mascot and her confidant for private thoughts. She shares a childhood friendship with Chisato Arashi dating back to elementary school, where Kanon frequently defended Chisato from bullies.
Kanon initially struggles with severe stage fright and social anxiety, causing her to freeze during critical moments like Yuigaoka's music program audition. This failure results in her enrollment in the general academic course. Though passionate about singing, she confines it to private moments, often using Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones while listening outdoors. Her anxiety, rooted in a history of choking under pressure, fuels self-criticism and hesitancy toward her dreams. Persistent encouragement from Keke Tang—a transfer student from China—leads Kanon to reluctantly join the school idol club, marking her first step in confronting these fears.
Her personality blends kindness, selflessness, and quiet determination. She consistently sees the best in others, even initially hostile individuals like strict student council president Ren Hazuki or egotistical Natsumi Onitsuka, an idealism bordering on naivety as she rejects negative assumptions about intentions. Despite her reserve, Kanon asserts herself when defending friends or principles, such as confronting Ren over unfair club restrictions. As Liella!'s leader, she composes lyrics and music, later sharing composing duties with Mei Yoneme. Demonstrating growing responsibility, she serves as student council vice president in the group's second year to support Ren.
Kanon's development focuses on gradually overcoming performance anxiety through Liella!'s support and her own resilience. Key milestones include performing solo at her former elementary school (arranged by Chisato) and leading the group through Love Live competitions. By her third year, she evolves into a confident performer and mentor, recruiting new members like Kinako Sakurakoji and aiding Natsumi's integration into Liella!. Her interpersonal insights help resolve group conflicts, detecting Chisato's hidden anxieties or motivating Sumire Heanna through creative blocks. She retains her empathy, humility, and love for music while adopting a more proactive guidance role.
Distinctive traits include her marigold-themed image color, orange hair, and purple eyes. She wears glasses at home and occasionally ties her hair up, though her bangs become a signature feature after receiving compliments. Habits include singing in the bath (to her family's annoyance), adopting a "concentrating pose" (a yoga stance) for brainstorming, and confiding in Manmaru. She possesses Spanish ancestry.
