Description
Mercenary is a Beastfallen, a human born with animal traits specifically resembling a white tiger marked by light grey stripes, white fur, and a distinctive scar across his nose. His physique is notably stocky and powerful, outweighing most humans and even other Beastfallen. His condition grants him superhuman abilities including enhanced strength, agility, endurance, reflexes, stamina, smell, hearing, and climbing proficiency, though climbing stone surfaces risks damaging his claws. He possesses extensive combat skills, utilizing swords, claws, fangs, and throwing knives.

Born to human parents in the southern part of the continent, he was cast out of his birth village due to his Beastfallen appearance but was adopted by accepting human tavern owners. Their village community treated him kindly during his childhood. This peaceful period ended when bandits attacked; his parents hid him and were killed. In retaliation, he slaughtered the bandits. Later, as a young adult, participation in large-scale wars led to intense bloodshed that earned him the moniker "Black Beast of Death" after accumulated blood darkened his white fur. This reputation resulted in capture and a planned execution by a military figure, though he was rescued by an ally named Barcel in exchange for assassinating that same figure.

His life changed upon meeting the witch Zero. Warned by her not to reveal his true name to prevent magical control, he became known solely as "Mercenary." They formed a partnership centered on locating the powerful magical text, the Grimoire of Zero. During their journey, he acted as Zero's protector. Their relationship deepened into marriage, making him the uncle-by-marriage of Zero's nephew, Saybil. After a conflict involving a northern disaster, they helped establish a village in the south to foster peace between humans, witches, and Beastfallen, settling in his childhood village.

A significant development occurred when Zero used magic to transform him into a human against his will, intending to prevent him from following her into danger. He sacrificed fingers to borrow demonic power, reversed the transformation, and chose to remain a Beastfallen permanently, stating he was content with his identity. Five years later, he fulfilled his long-standing dream by reopening his parents' tavern as a haven for humans, witches, sorcerers, and Beastfallen. This establishment became a recurring setting in later events.

Personality-wise, Mercenary maintains a gruff, stoic, blunt, and short-tempered exterior, often amplifying these traits to ensure others remain wary of Beastfallen. This stems from a desire to protect less resilient Beastfallen from the prejudice and abuse he witnessed. Beneath this demeanor, he possesses a kind-hearted and protective nature, especially toward Zero, whom he safeguards diligently despite her severe magical depletion from reviving him after his death. His commitment extends to her loved ones, including Saybil. His moral code evolved to emphasize avoiding harm to innocents, contrasting his earlier lethal actions during wartime.
