Description
Carina Atlas is a character from the 1988 anime film Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth. He serves as one of the three Corona Saints, a group of divine warriors who serve the sun god Abel, and is considered the strongest and leader of this trio. His name is derived from the constellation Carina, which represents the keel of the mythological ship Argo, and the Titan Atlas from Greek mythology, who was condemned to hold up the sky.

Physically, Atlas is depicted as a tall, muscular warrior with a toned build. While descriptions of his hair color vary, with some sources noting wavy blonde hair and others indicating green hair, he is consistently shown to possess blue eyes. As a Corona Saint, his armor is not a traditional Cloth granted by Athena but is a sacred armor known as a Corona, bestowed by the sun god Abel himself and symbolizing the power of the sun.

Atlas is defined by his immense pride and arrogance. He is vigorous and confident, believing wholeheartedly that power is the only thing that matters in defeating an opponent. This philosophy aligns perfectly with his god Abel, whom he admires and respects for sharing the same ideals. Atlas is deeply devoted to his master and shows no hesitation in punishing those he perceives as disrespecting the god, such as when he attempted to force the Bronze Saint Pegasus Seiya to kneel in submission. This overconfidence in his own strength is ultimately his greatest flaw. Along with his comrades, he is portrayed as having little honor, showing a readiness to attack opponents by surprise when it serves his purpose.

In the story, Atlas and his fellow Corona Saints, Berenice and Jao, descend to Earth alongside Abel. When several Gold Saints resurrected by Abel refuse to obey his plan to destroy Earth and instead side with Athena, Atlas is instrumental in their defeat. He personally finishes off Aquarius Camus and Capricorn Shura when they rebel. Throughout the film, Atlas proves to be a formidable obstacle for the Bronze Saints. He easily overpowers Seiya early in their encounter, destroying the Pegasus Cloth and leaving the hero unconscious. He also attacks Phoenix Ikki and Andromeda Shun from behind after the fall of another enemy, quickly knocking them down with his technique.

Atlas's key relationships are primarily defined by his service to Abel, to whom he has absolute loyalty. He fights alongside his fellow Corona Saints, Berenice and Jao, as a cohesive unit defending their master. His primary antagonists are the five Bronze Saints of Athena, whom he views as inferior beings unworthy of challenging his god's power.

Despite his power, Atlas undergoes a significant defeat that serves as the climax of his role. After his comrades are defeated, he single-handedly takes on all five Bronze Saints at the Hill of Dignity, initially overwhelming them with ease. However, the tide turns when the Gold Cloths of Sagittarius, Libra, and Aquarius materialize to protect Seiya, Shiryu, and Hyoga. As his arrogance leads him to underestimate his revitalized opponents, he is struck by a powerful combination of attacks from Shiryu and Hyoga before finally being defeated by Seiya's Pegasus Suisei Ken, the Pegasus Meteor Fist.

Regarding his abilities, Atlas is an extraordinarily powerful warrior whose combat prowess rivals that of the Gold Saints, possessing immense strength, agility, and speed that can reach the speed of light by mastering the Seventh Sense. His signature technique is the Burning Corona. With this attack, he raises his arms and concentrates his cosmos to generate powerful, sun-shaped fireballs in his palms, which he then hurls at his opponent. The attack is known not only for causing devastating burns but also for entering the enemy's body and exploding from within. In addition to this offensive power, Atlas can also generate a powerful protective barrier around his body, which is capable of deflecting most incoming attacks. These abilities make him a nearly invincible foe until the Bronze Saints themselves are empowered by the Gold Cloths and elevate their own cosmos to a comparable level.
