Description
Chester Burklight is a central protagonist from the role-playing game Tales of Phantasia. He is a seventeen-year-old young man from the small village of Toltus, where he lives with his younger sister, Ami. Having lost his parents when he was young, Chester developed a strong sense of responsibility and a particularly protective, doting nature toward his sister.
Chester has long blue hair that he keeps tied back in a ponytail and sharp, fox-like eyes that give him a distinctive, often serious appearance. His typical attire consists of a light blue top with dark blue trim, off-white pants, a white scarf, brown fingerless gloves, and coordinating boots, with a brown quiver often seen on his back. He primarily fights with a bow as an archer and takes great pride in his exceptional skill with the weapon.
On the surface, Chester is known for being brash, blunt, and somewhat arrogant. He enjoys arguing with people and does not shy away from speaking his mind, but this rough exterior hides a deeply caring individual, especially toward those who have suffered similar hardships. He possesses a great deal of pride in himself, and when that pride is challenged, he can become cold and sour. However, this same pride fuels a determined and unyielding nature, allowing him to become fiercely focused and hot-blooded when he finds a goal to pursue.
The tragedy that shapes Chester's journey is the sudden attack on his hometown of Toltus. When he and his best friend, Cress Albane, return to the village, they find it destroyed, and Chester is left mourning the death of his beloved sister, Ami. This loss instills in him a powerful vow of revenge against those responsible, primarily the dark knight Mars Uldole and the demon lord Dhaos. In the initial confrontation with Dhaos, Chester makes a desperate and heroic sacrifice, attacking the powerful foe to buy time for Cress and a companion to be sent back in time to safety. He survives this encounter, though he is left behind and initially outmatched by the rest of the party, who have gained experience and power during their travels through time.
Chester forms the core of the game's emotional relationships. His bond with Cress is that of a childhood friend and brother; they share a sibling-like rivalry, frequently poking fun at each other, but possess an unshakeable loyalty and will always support one another. His most notable party relationship is with the half-elf mage, Arche Klein. The two share a volatile, bickering dynamic, constantly trading insults and sniping at each other. Despite their mutual claims of dislike, their constant arguments hide a deep friendship and a hint of unspoken romantic tension. Looking forward, Chester is known to eventually marry Arche and have a son named Falken.
Initially, Chester is inexperienced compared to the time-traveling heroes, but he is determined to catch up and prove his worth. His abilities as an archer are formidable, and by the end of the game, he becomes an exceptionally strong fighter. While earlier versions of the game gave him only basic attacks, later versions and remakes provide him with a skillset that includes elemental shots, multiple-arrow volleys, and other powerful techniques. With the strongest bows in the game, such as the Soul Eater or Berserker Bow, he is capable of dealing more physical damage than nearly any other character, making him a valuable and powerful member of the party.
