Description
Brass is a key supporting character in the story, known primarily as the adoptive grandfather of the protagonist, Dai. His background is unique among the peaceful monsters of Dermline Island, as he was not always a gentle hermit. Before the defeat of the original Dark Lord Hadlar, Brass held the rank of a high-ranking general within the Dark Army. He was part of an elite quartet of commanders, though his role was often more focused on logistics and training rather than pure front-line combat. Specifically, he was tasked with using magical troop-transport tubes to manage and train monsters for Hadlar's forces. Following Hadlar’s first defeat at the hands of the hero Avan, Brass’s life changed course. Freed from the Dark Lord’s malevolent influence, he chose a path of peace, leading a community of former monsters who migrated to the isolated Dermline Island to live in tranquility. It was there that he discovered a human infant washed ashore, marked only by a "D" on his clothing. Naming the child Dai, Brass took him in and raised him as his own grandson.
In terms of personality, Brass is the archetypal wise and caring elder, though he is not without his quirks and a stern sense of practicality. He is deeply paternal and protective, having fostered a loving family environment on the island where humans and monsters live side by side. However, this kindness is balanced by a pragmatic and slightly stubborn worldview, largely shaped by his past experiences with war and loss. His primary wish for Dai is safety, which leads him to push the boy toward becoming a mage, a path Brass believes is less dangerous than that of a warrior. He often resists Dai’s dream of becoming a hero like Avan, fearing the perils it would bring. Despite his gruff exterior and attempts to be a disciplinarian, Brass has a gentle heart and a deep-seated sense of justice. Notably, his composure can shatter when dark magic is involved; exposure to evil forces can revert him to a more primal, aggressive state reminiscent of his days as a general, forcing his allies to subdue him.
Brass’s primary motivation throughout the story is the protection of his family and his home. He seeks to maintain the peaceful sanctuary of Dermline Island and to shield Dai from the violent destiny that seems to await him. His role in the narrative evolves from being a simple caretaker and magic tutor to a steadfast source of wisdom and support. Early on, he facilitates Dai’s first adventure by providing him with a sword and the magical cylinders needed to store monsters, showing that despite his protests, he will aid the boy's heroic path. As the story progresses, Brass often acts as an advisor and a surrogate father figure from the sidelines, offering guidance and a safe haven for Dai and his friends to return to. He is not a front-line fighter in the main conflict against the revived Hadlar, but his contributions are crucial, such as when he is forcibly turned into an enemy. In a tragic turn of events, a villain named Zaboera uses mind control to force Brass to aid the Dark Army and battle his own grandson. Fortunately, he is freed from this spell and returns to his role as the guardian of Dermline.
Regarding key relationships, the most significant is, of course, with Dai. Brass is his adoptive grandfather, and the bond between them is one of deep, unconditional love, even if they often disagree about Dai's future. He is also the leader and caretaker of the other monsters on the island, including Dai’s best friend, the golden slime Gomechan. His relationship with the hero Avan is also notable; while Brass initially wanted Dai to follow magic, he ultimately respects Avan’s training and the destiny it sets in motion. After the final conflict, Brass’s commitment to peace is further demonstrated when he shares Dermline Island with former enemies, including the formidable Crocodine, showing a profound capacity for reconciliation and forgiveness.
In terms of development, Brass’s journey is one of letting go. He begins as a controlling guardian who fears the outside world and wishes to keep Dai confined to the safety of their island. Through the trials that Dai faces and the allies he makes, Brass gradually learns to trust in the young hero’s strength and convictions. His character comes full circle from a feared general of darkness to a peaceful grandfather, and finally to a proud patriarch watching his grandson save the world. His past as a high-ranking general is not a source of shame but a reminder of the peace he has helped build, and his legacy endures in the harmony of his island home.
Notable abilities are derived from his background as a monster magician and former general. He is proficient in several offensive and restorative spells common to the Dragon Quest universe, including Frizz for fire attacks, Swoosh for wind-based attacks, and Midheal for healing. While his magical power is not as immense as younger, dedicated mages like Dai’s friend Popp, his experience and knowledge of spellcraft are considerable. Furthermore, his past as a military leader grants him strategic knowledge and leadership skills that prove invaluable in managing the monster community and advising younger heroes.
