Description
Crocodine is a prominent character from the anime Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken, initially appearing as a formidable antagonist before undergoing a significant transformation. He holds the title of Beast King and serves as the commander of the Furfang Legion, also known as the Hundred Beasts Legion, within the Dark Army. In this capacity, he leads a vast army of monsters, instilling fear across various kingdoms on behalf of the dark forces.
As a massive, humanoid reptile resembling a crocodile, Crocodine's most distinctive physical trait is his pink scales, which cover a powerfully muscular frame complete with a strong tail. He typically wears a suit of silver and black Roman-style armor, a flowing white cape, and carries his signature weapon, the Vortex Axe. After an early confrontation with the hero Dai, he loses his left eye, a wound that serves as a permanent mark of that first defeat.
Personality-wise, Crocodine is characterized by a deep sense of pride and a warrior's honor. At the beginning, he is extremely confident in his immense physical strength, which he claims surpasses even that of his superior, the Dark Lord Hadlar, and he looks down on those he deems weaker. He seeks worthy challenges and, in his initial battles with Dai, displays a grudging respect for the young hero's abilities. However, his sense of honor is initially misguided, as he fights for the evil Dark Army while despising humans. This integrity is put to the test when the scheming mystic Zaboera pressures him into using underhanded tactics, such as taking a hostage. Crocodine reluctantly agrees, driven by a desperate obsession with victory and a need to protect his position, but the experience leaves him feeling disgusted with himself.
Crocodine's motivations evolve dramatically over the course of the story. Initially driven by a desire to eliminate the heroes on Hadlar's orders and to avenge his wounded pride, his outlook changes after a pivotal battle in the kingdom of Romos. It is there that the mage Popp, despite being far outmatched, demonstrates incredible courage and self-sacrifice to protect his friends and free the hostage. Popp's words about pride and fighting for others resonate deeply with Crocodine, making him realize how low he has fallen. After being defeated by Dai, he accepts his loss with honor, apologizes for his dishonorable actions, and seemingly falls to his death as an act of repentance.
Surviving this fall, Crocodine re-emerges as a powerful ally to the main party. His role shifts from a primary antagonist to a crucial supporting character and a steadfast friend. He defects from the Dark Army, inspired by the heroes' courage, and dedicates himself to their cause. His key relationships are forged in this period. He becomes a great friend and protector to Popp, the one who taught him the true meaning of pride, and develops a close bond with the party as a whole, even showing a soft spot for the much weaker ally Chiu. He also shares a unique camaraderie with Hyunckel, another former enemy who joined the heroes, as they both understand the path of redemption.
Throughout his development, Crocodine struggles with the differences between humans and monsters, feeling at times that he does not deserve to share in their joyous moments. However, his new companions constantly reject this notion, inviting him to celebrate with them and teaching him that strength tempered without kindness is just power. By the end, he fully embraces his role as a hero, willing to sacrifice himself multiple times to protect his weaker companions.
In terms of abilities, Crocodine is a pure warrior who cannot cast spells, but he compensates with his overwhelming physical power and incredibly durable hide that can repel most blades. His signature weapon, the Vortex Axe, is magically enchanted and can unleash powerful gusts of wind. He also possesses a potent breath attack called Heat Breath, which can paralyze his foes. His most devastating technique is the Beast King Anguish Blast, a terrifying stream of concentrated kinetic aura that he unleashes from one of his arms. After joining the heroes, he renames this attack the Beast King Redemption Blast. Through rigorous training, he later develops an even more powerful technique, the Beast King Indomitable Blast, by generating two opposing streams of energy from both hands that can tear apart even the hardest substances, including the legendary metal Orichalcum.
