Description
Maam is the daughter of Leira and Loca, two of the hero Avan’s former companions who fought alongside him against the Dark Lord Hadlar. She was trained by Avan himself and inherited her mother’s aptitude for healing magic, becoming a priestess. However, she could not learn offensive spells, so Avan gave her a magic bullet gun that fired spells to compensate for that weakness. By the time of the events in the third theatrical film, Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken Buchiya bure!! Shinsei Rokudai Shoguo, Maam has already lost that gun and relies instead on a hammer-spear, a heavy weapon originally belonging to her mother that she wields with surprising strength.

In this film, set during the period between the defeat of Flazzard and Maam’s later decision to leave the party for martial arts training, she is part of the group helping to rebuild the city of Papunika. Her personality is warm, compassionate, and protective; she often acts as a supportive elder sister figure to both Dai and Popp, caring deeply for their safety and well-being. Her primary motivation is to assist her friends in their fight against evil and to protect the innocent. When the new demon commander Galbus and his six generals launch a surprise assault, Maam is targeted by the generals Menero and Deathskull, who steal her soul. She falls into a deathlike sleep, and the rest of the film revolves around Dai and Popp’s desperate quest to retrieve her soul before she dies.

Although Maam is largely unconscious for most of the plot, her plight serves as the emotional core of the story. Her close relationship with Dai and Popp is highlighted through their willingness to sacrifice themselves for her. She is also shown to be courageous in the brief moments she is active; even without her magic bullet gun, she attempts to fight back, as seen when she throws her hammer-spear at Menero in a last-ditch effort. Notable abilities at this stage include her healing magic and her physical strength, which allows her to handle the hammer-spear effectively in close combat. She is not yet the martial artist she will become later, but the film hints at her potential by emphasizing her resilience and resourcefulness.
