He is the legendary hero who, fifteen years before the main story, defeated the Dark Lord Hadlar and saved the world from his evil reign. Following this monumental victory, Avan retired from active heroism and became a tutor, dedicating himself to training a new generation of warriors. His most notable students are the four who would become known as the Disciples of Avan: the young dragon knight Dai, the mage Popp, the martial artist Maam, and the swordsman Hyunckel.

Physically, Avan is a tall man with fair skin, dark eyes, and distinctive curly, lavender-blue hair. His appearance as a mentor typically consists of a red military-style uniform with epaulets and a pair of large, thick-framed glasses, which he does not actually need for vision. When Hadlar is resurrected and attacks, a weakened Avan does not hesitate to cast the ultimate self-sacrifice spell, Megante, in a desperate attempt to destroy the Dark Lord and protect his young students, Dai and Popp.

His apparent death at the beginning of the series becomes the primary catalyst for his disciples' journey, fueling their determination to avenge him and carry on his legacy. Though believed dead for much of the story, Avan secretly survives his own sacrifice thanks to a protective talisman given to him by Princess Flora. He remains in hiding, using this time to further his own training and gather resources to support his students from the shadows, finally revealing himself to aid them directly in the final battle against the Dark King Vearn.

He shares a deep, unspoken respect and rivalry with his first student, Hyunckel. His closest friend from his youth is Roka, a knight of Carl with whom he began his journey against Hadlar. Avan is an immensely powerful and versatile individual, widely considered one of the strongest humans to have ever lived. He is a Magic Knight, proficient in both swordsmanship and high-level magic. He developed his own unique school of combat, the Avan Style Sword Techniques, which consists of three core principles: the power-focused Earth Slash, the speed-focused Wave Slash, and the aura-control-focused Air Slash. By mastering and combining these principles, he created his signature and most powerful technique, the Avan Strash, a devastating attack performed with a reverse-grip sword swing. He is also capable of using advanced spells, including the secret Time-Freezing Spell and the sacrificial explosion spell, Megante. Beyond combat, Avan is highly intelligent, a master strategist, an ingenious craftsman who created Maam's Magic Gun, and even a supremely talented cook. His training regimen, particularly his infamous "Special Hard Course," is brutally effective, rapidly elevating his students' abilities to exceptional levels.
