Description
Avan, known fully as Avan de Zinuar III, is a pivotal figure in the world of Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken. He is the legendary hero who, fifteen years before the main story, defeated the Dark Lord Hadlar and saved the world from his evil reign. Following this monumental victory, Avan retired from active heroism and became a tutor, dedicating himself to training a new generation of warriors. His most notable students are the four who would become known as the Disciples of Avan: the young dragon knight Dai, the mage Popp, the martial artist Maam, and the swordsman Hyunckel.
Physically, Avan is a tall man with fair skin, dark eyes, and distinctive curly, lavender-blue hair. His appearance as a mentor typically consists of a red military-style uniform with epaulets and a pair of large, thick-framed glasses, which he does not actually need for vision. In his younger days as an active hero, he wore the armor of a knight from his home kingdom of Carl, complemented by a yellow tunic and a long cape.
Personality-wise, Avan presents a contradictory and layered character. On the surface, he is an outgoing, cheerful, and seemingly carefree individual. He is known for his eccentric and sometimes goofy behavior, often appearing unserious or even foolish. This lighthearted demeanor extends to his teaching style, which can appear relaxed and not overly strict, a trait that his friend Matoriv sometimes criticizes. However, this is largely a facade. Avan deliberately hides his immense intelligence and true capabilities behind a mask of silliness, a habit stemming from his family's history as unfairly feared prophets in the kingdom of Carl. When a serious situation arises, particularly when the lives of those he cares about are in danger, this mask drops to reveal his true nature: a deeply thoughtful, reflective, and genuinely heroic individual with an unshakeable will. He is kind, warm-hearted, and an incredibly caring teacher who always seeks to bring out the best in his students.
Avan’s core motivation is the protection of peace and the nurturing of future heroes. After defeating Hadlar, he recognized the need to pass on his knowledge and skills, ensuring the world would always have protectors. He holds a deep-seated wish for world peace, a desire he ultimately passes on to his disciple Dai. His actions are consistently driven by a selfless dedication to his students and the greater good, even at great personal cost. When Hadlar is resurrected and attacks, a weakened Avan does not hesitate to cast the ultimate self-sacrifice spell, Megante, in a desperate attempt to destroy the Dark Lord and protect his young students, Dai and Popp.
Avan's role in the story is that of the quintessential mentor and former hero. He serves as the initial benchmark for power and heroism, having accomplished the legendary feat of saving the world. His apparent death at the beginning of the series becomes the primary catalyst for his disciples' journey, fueling their determination to avenge him and carry on his legacy. Though believed dead for much of the story, Avan secretly survives his own sacrifice thanks to a protective talisman given to him by Princess Flora. He remains in hiding, using this time to further his own training and gather resources to support his students from the shadows, finally revealing himself to aid them directly in the final battle against the Dark King Vearn.
Key relationships define Avan’s past and present. His most important bond is with his four disciples, whom he trains and inspires. He shares a deep, unspoken respect and rivalry with his first student, Hyunckel. His closest friend from his youth is Roka, a knight of Carl with whom he began his journey against Hadlar. Alongside Roka, Avan formed a party that included Leira, a priestess and rogue who would become Roka's wife and Maam's mother; Matoriv, a powerful but eccentric grand sorcerer who becomes a lifelong loyal friend; and Brokeena, the legendary "God of Martial Arts" who serves as a wise mentor figure. Avan also shares a significant bond with Princess Flora of Carl, who believes in him and whose safety first inspired him to stop hiding his true power. Her gift, the talisman that saves his life, underscores their deep connection.
While Avan does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, his development is seen in his transition from a hidden prodigy to a celebrated hero and finally to a selfless mentor. He learns to let go of his need to be the sole protector of the world, instead trusting in and empowering his students to surpass him. He acknowledges that his disciples have the potential to become far stronger than he ever was, and he deliberately steps back to allow their growth, content to play a supporting role.
Avan is an immensely powerful and versatile individual, widely considered one of the strongest humans to have ever lived. He is a Magic Knight, proficient in both swordsmanship and high-level magic. He developed his own unique school of combat, the Avan Style Sword Techniques, which consists of three core principles: the power-focused Earth Slash, the speed-focused Wave Slash, and the aura-control-focused Air Slash. By mastering and combining these principles, he created his signature and most powerful technique, the Avan Strash, a devastating attack performed with a reverse-grip sword swing. He is also capable of using advanced spells, including the secret Time-Freezing Spell and the sacrificial explosion spell, Megante. Beyond combat, Avan is highly intelligent, a master strategist, an ingenious craftsman who created Maam's Magic Gun, and even a supremely talented cook. His training regimen, particularly his infamous "Special Hard Course," is brutally effective, rapidly elevating his students' abilities to exceptional levels.
