Description
In the Sailor Moon SuperS era, the character known as Sailor Uranus is the alter ego of Haruka Tenoh, a tall and strikingly androgynous teenage girl. Within the narrative of the franchise, Sailor Uranus is one of the Outer Sailor Guardians, a group of warriors whose primary duty is to protect the solar system from external threats that originate beyond its borders. Unlike the Inner Guardians who focus on defending their princess, Sailor Uranus and her partner, Sailor Neptune, operate on a larger, more cosmic scale, often making difficult decisions for the greater good.
Haruka Tenoh, in her civilian life, is a confident and talented individual with a passion for speed. Despite being only sixteen years old at her introduction, she is already a skilled race car driver, a pursuit that reflects her love for freedom and living in the moment. Her physical appearance is notably tall and lean, and she often dresses in masculine clothing which, combined with her short hair and sharp features, leads people to initially mistake her for a handsome boy. Her personality is characterized by a strong will, a protective nature, and a daring, sometimes flirtatious demeanor. She is known to tease those she finds interesting, including the series' protagonist, Usagi, whom she playfully calls "Odango" or "Kitten". However, beneath this bold exterior, she is also highly private, easily flustered when the tables are turned, and struggles with personal confessions.
Her motivations are deeply tied to her role as a Sailor Guardian. Sailor Uranus operates with a pragmatic and mission-focused worldview, believing that sacrifices may be necessary to protect the world. This often puts her at odds with the Inner Guardians, who seek to save everyone, leading her to be perceived as an antihero early in her appearances. She is utterly dedicated to her mission, which she considers to be of the highest priority, and is willing to carry its burdens alone to prevent others from suffering.
In the story, Sailor Uranus serves as a more experienced and powerful counterpoint to the Inner Guardians. Her role is to act as a first line of defense against threats emerging from far beyond the solar system. Within the SuperS film, she and the other Outer Guardians appear as allies, though their presence in that timeline creates inconsistencies with the main series narrative. She is rarely seen without her constant companion and partner, Sailor Neptune, also known as Michiru Kaioh. Their relationship is the most significant in her life; they are depicted as a devoted romantic couple whose deep bond is central to her character. She is also a close ally of Sailor Pluto, Setsuna Meioh, and together the three form a tight-knit unit. Following the rebirth of Sailor Saturn as an infant, Haruka, along with Michiru and Setsuna, vows to care for the child, forming an unconventional found family living together.
Throughout the series, Haruka and her Sailor identity show little internal development in terms of personality, as they are introduced as already mature and fully aware of their duties. The most significant development is a growing trust and camaraderie with the Inner Guardians, whom they initially kept at a distance. Her power upgrades, marked by the transition to the "Super Sailor Uranus" form, signify an increase in her strength and resolve to protect her loved ones.
As a warrior, Sailor Uranus possesses notable abilities that draw power from the concept of the sky and wind. She transforms using a special device, originally the phrase Uranus Planet Power, Make Up. Her signature and most powerful attack is World Shaking, where she gathers energy from the sky and unleashes it as a devastating shockwave that tears through her enemies. She also carries a legendary weapon known as the Space Sword, one of three powerful artifacts called Talismans. Using this sword, she can perform Space Sword Blaster, a technique that fires a barrage of powerful energy slashes. In the manga, she also achieves a more powerful manga-only attack called Space Turbulence. These abilities, combined with her natural athleticism, sword combat skills, and aggressive fighting style, make her one of the most formidable fighters in the series.
