TV Special
Description
Chibiusa, also known as Sailor Chibi Moon, is the civilian identity of a Sailor Guardian who appears as a central figure in the Sailor Moon SuperS storyline. Her full name is Usagi Small Lady Serenity, but she is called Chibiusa, which roughly translates to "little rabbit," to avoid confusion with her mother, Usagi Tsukino. Chibiusa hails from the 30th century and is the Crown Princess of Crystal Tokyo, the daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, who are the future counterparts of the present-day heroes Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. Despite being chronologically over 900 years old, she appears and behaves as a child around six years of age, as her physical growth has been delayed due to the power of the Silver Crystal and her own unawakened powers as a Sailor Senshi.
In terms of personality, Chibiusa is initially introduced as a spoiled, bratty, and somewhat hostile child, often bickering with her future mother, Usagi. She is energetic, extroverted, and outgoing, but her behavior is also a product of her trauma and loneliness. Beneath her sometimes abrasive exterior, she has a good heart and genuinely cares for those around her. She secretly admires Usagi, and their frequent arguments mask a deep, underlying love and respect. As the series progresses, particularly into Sailor Moon SuperS, her mindset gradually matures, and she begins to think more deeply about complex subjects such as love and duty. She is also shown to be a deeply loving and loyal friend, displaying a fierce determination to protect those she cares about.
Chibiusa's primary motivation throughout her appearances is initially to save her mother, Neo-Queen Serenity, after Crystal Tokyo is attacked by the Black Moon Clan. She travels back in time to the 20th century to seek the help of the Sailor Guardians. Later, her reasons for returning to the past shift towards training to become a proper Sailor Guardian and to forge important friendships and alliances for the future. In the context of Sailor Moon SuperS, she is driven by her desire to protect the dreams of others and her connection to a mysterious entity known as Pegasus, who resides within her dream mirror. She seeks to become a true heroine and prove her worth as a Sailor Senshi.
Chibiusa's role in the story is multi-faceted. She acts as a deuteragonist, particularly in the SuperS season, where a significant portion of the plot revolves around her relationship with Pegasus and her growth as a Sailor Guardian. Her arrival in the past serves as a bridge between the present and the future, linking the current struggles of the Sailor Guardians to the fate of Crystal Tokyo. She is also a key figure in redeeming others, as she was once corrupted by darkness and transformed into the villainous Black Lady before being saved by Sailor Moon's love. In SuperS, her role is central to the conflict against the Dead Moon Circus, as her pure dreams attract Pegasus, making her a target but also the key to victory.
Key relationships define much of Chibiusa's development. Her most important relationship is with her future mother, Usagi Tsukino. Despite their constant arguing and rivalry, especially over Mamoru's affection, they share a powerful bond, and Usagi is fiercely protective of her. She is also deeply attached to her future father, Mamoru Chiba, sometimes displaying an oddly strong attachment to him that is largely played for comedic effect. During the events of Sailor Moon SuperS, she forms a profound and intimate connection with Helios, the guardian of the Golden Crystal who takes the form of Pegasus. He appears in her dreams, and they develop a close, romantic bond, sharing a kiss before he departs. Chibiusa also forms a crucial friendship with Hotaru Tomoe, who becomes Sailor Saturn, and is very close to the time guardian Setsuna Meiou, also known as Sailor Pluto. She is also accompanied by her grey kitten, Diana, who is the daughter of the moon cats Luna and Artemis.
Throughout the anime series, Chibiusa undergoes significant development. Starting as a bratty and helpless child in Sailor Moon R, she matures into a more capable and level-headed individual in Sailor Moon S and SuperS. By the SuperS season, she is no longer just a child in need of rescue but an active and important member of the Sailor Guardian team. Her experiences, including being corrupted into Black Lady and befriending the lonely Hotaru, teach her about love, sacrifice, and the strength of her own heart. Her relationship with Pegasus specifically helps her explore her own feelings about love and courage, pushing her to become a more selfless and determined heroine.
As a Sailor Guardian, Chibiusa possesses a range of notable abilities. Her primary transformation calls include "Moon Prism Power, Make Up" and later "Moon Crisis, Make Up" to become Sailor Chibi Moon. Her signature attack is the Pink Sugar Heart Attack, which she performs using her Pink Moon Stick. Other abilities include the Twinkle Yell, which she uses to summon Pegasus in the SuperS season, and the Supersonic Waves, a cry that can disorient enemies. In the anime, before she could transform, she could emit a powerful energy column from the crescent moon symbol on her forehead when frightened or alarmed. She is also accompanied by a magical, shape-shifting device called Luna P, which can create illusions and other effects. Later in the manga and Crystal adaptations, her powers grow significantly, allowing her to achieve Super and Eternal forms and to lead her own team of Sailor Guardians, the Sailor Quartet.
