Description
Haze is the alias taken by Keough, a significant character in Ragnarok The Animation, after he falls under the control of the main antagonist, the Dark Lord. Originally a noble knight and the elder brother of one of the main protagonists, Yufa, Keough's transformation into Haze forms a central tragedy of the series. He is a character whose identity is split between his past as a heroic protector and his present as a brainwashed servant of evil.

Before becoming Haze, Keough was a skilled knight and childhood friend of Iruga, an assassin who would later become a key member of the main group. During an expedition to the cursed ruins of Glast Heim, the party was ambushed by a powerful monster known as an Abysmal Knight. In a selfless act, Keough stayed behind to hold off the creature, allowing Iruga to escort his younger sister Yufa and her companion Roan to safety. The group believed he had died in that encounter, but in truth, Keough was gravely wounded by a blade known as the Blade Lost in Darkness and was subsequently captured and corrupted by the Dark Lord. It is after this fall from grace that Iruga gives him the nickname, Haze, signifying the lost and obscured person he has become. As Haze, he dons a mask and serves as a subordinate to the Dark Lord, a physical representation of his lost identity.

The personality of Haze is a tragic echo of the knight Keough once was. While corrupted, he is cold, ruthless, and committed to his master's dark plan. His primary motivation is to lure his sister, Yufa, to the side of evil because she possesses a soul crystal that is vital to the Dark Lord's full revival. His role in the story is that of a dark mirror and a persistent emotional threat to the heroes. He is not simply a monster to be defeated, but a beloved figure who must be saved, creating immense inner turmoil for both Yufa and Iruga. His reappearance shocks the main characters, forcing them to confront their past trauma and putting their resolve to the test against a foe they do not wish to harm.

Keough's key relationships are the driving force of his narrative arc. His bond with his sister Yufa is the most critical, as the Dark Lord exploits his love for her to use him as a tool for her capture. His friendship with Iruga is another pillar of his character. Iruga refuses to give up on him, and their conflict is framed as a painful duty; Iruga seeks to free his friend's soul even if it means killing him. This leads to the final, tragic resolution of his development. In the climactic battle within Glast Heim, Iruga and Keough deal fatal blows to each other. However, in his final moments, Keough's will breaks free from the Dark Lord's corruption. He reforms, apologizes to Iruga for his actions as Haze, and dies as the knight he once was. His redemption is sealed when his soul appears to Yufa in a dream, guiding her away from the path of darkness and reassuring her that Roan will protect her. As a knight, Keough was a formidable warrior, and this skill is preserved in his Haze persona, allowing him to be a deadly physical combatant.
