TV Special
Description
Kira Yamato is a first-generation Coordinator who initially resides on the neutral space colony Heliopolis in the Cosmic Era timeline. His goal is to live a peaceful life away from the conflict between genetically enhanced Coordinators and naturally born Naturals. However, when the colony is attacked by the ZAFT military, he is forced to pilot the mobile suit GAT-X105 Strike Gundam to protect his friends who are aboard the terrestrial vessel Archangel. Kira is later revealed to be a "Super Coordinator," the only successful result of a genetic experiment designed to create the ultimate human, and is the twin brother of Cagalli Yula Athha.
By nature, Kira is a kind, compassionate, and deeply sensitive individual with a strong pacifist disposition. He is an introvert who spends significant time contemplating his emotions and possesses a profound respect for all life. A strong believer in individualism and the freedom of choice, he holds firm that a person's dreams and will are what define them, not their genetic makeup. Despite his high intelligence, he can be stubborn and sometimes acts recklessly, entering dangerous situations driven by his need to protect others. Kira is highly empathetic, which makes him profoundly affected by the trauma of war; he is haunted by the deaths he has caused and the lives he has failed to save, often berating himself for any perceived failure. His core motivation shifts from simply defending his immediate friends to actively trying to end the war. He concludes that passivity born from fear will only prolong conflict, and thus chooses to fight not to destroy an enemy, but to save lives, aiming to disable enemy mobile suits rather than kill the pilots. This aversion to killing is a core tenet of his personal code, developed through intense personal suffering.
In the story, Kira begins as a reluctant civilian soldier but grows into a pivotal independent force. After his original Strike Gundam is destroyed, he receives the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam from Lacus Clyne, an ally who shares his ideals. With this powerful machine, he and the crew of the Archangel reject the leadership of both the Earth Alliance and ZAFT, forming a third-party "Three Ships Alliance" dedicated to stopping the war. He continues this role in subsequent conflicts, using his power to intervene in battles he deems unjust and to protect those who cannot protect themselves, eventually leading him into direct confrontation with extremist factions on both sides of the human divide.
His most significant relationship is with Lacus Clyne, a PLANT singer and politician who becomes his eternal partner and a key source of emotional support. She helps him reconcile with his traumatic past and provides him with the Freedom Gundam, solidifying their shared vision for peace. His other defining relationship is with Athrun Zara, his childhood best friend who becomes his bitter enemy as a ZAFT pilot. Their conflict, marked by the deaths of their respective friends Tolle Koenig and Nicol Amalfi, culminates in a nearly fatal duel that forces both to re-evaluate their reasons for fighting. They eventually reconcile, becoming steadfast allies and rivals who fight side-by-side with mutual understanding. Kira also shares a deep bond with his twin sister, Cagalli Yula Athha, who provides him emotional support, especially after he learns the truth of his origins. His relationship with Flay Allster is more complex and painful; she initially manipulates his feelings to use him as a weapon for her revenge against Coordinators, though her eventual death becomes a source of great sorrow for him.
Kira undergoes significant development throughout his journey. He starts as a pacifist student horrified by violence but is forced to compromise his morals to survive. The psychological toll of combat leads to intense depression and an existential crisis upon learning he was created as the "Ultimate Coordinator." With support from Lacus, he finds the courage to accept his past and his actions, forming a new resolve to fight only to protect. By the time of later conflicts, he has matured into a calmer, more stoic, and philosophical individual who speaks candidly. While he remains kind, he becomes more suspicious of others' motivations and takes on a reluctant leadership role, inspiring loyalty through his example and unyielding idealism, even if he avoids official authority.
Kira possesses several notable abilities. He is a prodigious programmer, able to adapt and rewrite a mobile suit's complex operating system in real-time to improve its performance in any environment. His piloting style is characterized by exceptional spatial awareness and marksmanship, allowing him to precisely target the weapons and limbs of enemy units to disable them without causing pilot fatalities. He can enter a heightened state known as "SEED mode" under extreme emotional stress, which greatly amplifies his reflexes, focus, and information processing. While highly skilled with mobile suits, he is notably less experienced with personal firearms, preferring not to use them.
