Description
Dearka Elthman is a fictional character from the animated feature Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Special Edition. He is a Coordinator, a genetically enhanced human, born on March 29 in the year Cosmic Era 54 on the space colony PLANT. As a young man, he has brown skin, blonde hair, and purple eyes, standing 176 centimeters tall during the first conflict and growing to 180 centimeters by the age of nineteen.

Coming from a privileged background, Dearka is the son of Tad Elsman, a chancellor on the PLANT Supreme Council, which gives him a certain status within their society. During the initial war between PLANT and the Earth Alliance, he is a seventeen-year-old soldier in ZAFT, the military force of the Coordinators, and holds the rank of a Red uniform, denoting him as an elite pilot. He is assigned to the Le Creuset team, an elite special forces unit.

At the start of the story, Dearka has a humorous yet notably arrogant and sarcastic personality. He looks down on Naturals, or unmodified humans, and those he considers weak, and he frequently uses wit and scorn to express his superiority. This attitude is shared by his teammate Yzak Joule, with whom he forms a close bond. However, unlike the hot-headed Yzak, Dearka tends to express his disdain with a more detached, sarcastic tone.

Dearka's role in the narrative begins with a raid on the neutral Orb colony Heliopolis, where he successfully steals a powerful new Earth Alliance mobile suit, the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam. He pilots this long-range artillery unit in repeated attacks on the Earth Alliance ship, the Archangel. His motivations at this point are straightforward: he is a soldier following orders and fighting for his people against the Naturals. His key relationships at this stage are with his teammates, particularly his close friend Yzak Joule, and his squad leader Athrun Zala.

A turning point for Dearka occurs when his Buster Gundam is damaged in battle. With the Archangel's guns locked onto him, he is forced to surrender and becomes a prisoner of war aboard the very ship he was trying to destroy. While in captivity, he is confronted by Miriallia Haw, a young Natural crew member. His sarcastic comment, unknowingly referring to her boyfriend who was recently killed in battle, nearly leads to her attacking him. In a moment of confusion, another crew member holds a gun to his head, and it is Miriallia who saves his life by intervening.

This experience forces Dearka to re-evaluate everything he believes. Through his interactions with Miriallia and the other Natural crew members, he begins to see them as individuals rather than enemies. He develops a close bond with Miriallia, who eventually brings him meals, and his respect for Naturals grows. He witnesses how both the Earth Alliance and ZAFT are becoming controlled by corrupt, genocidal leaders, such as Muruta Azrael and Patrick Zala. This realization motivates him to escape the brig, reclaim his Buster Gundam, and fight alongside the Archangel and the Clyne Faction, a group seeking to end the war. His primary motivation becomes the protection of Miriallia and the other Naturals he has come to respect.

This decision puts him in direct conflict with his past. During a battle, he confronts his best friend Yzak, who accuses him of betraying ZAFT and the PLANTs. Dearka admits he is not a traitor but has simply gained respect for Naturals and refuses to follow orders to kill them indiscriminately. This moment highlights his significant development from an arrogant soldier into an individual who thinks for himself and acts on his conscience.

After the war ends and PLANT comes under stable leadership, Dearka makes the difficult choice to return to ZAFT. However, his past disobedience results in a demotion, and he no longer wears the elite Red uniform. He serves as the adjutant commander and trusted right-hand man to his comrade Yzak in the Joule team, piloting a ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner ZAKU Warrior and later a black-colored ZGMF-1001/M Blaze ZAKU Phantom. During this second conflict, he and Miriallia have parted ways, with the relationship having ended at some point between the wars. While he has matured and his views have changed, he retains his practical and somewhat sardonic demeanor, often trying to calm the explosive temper of his commander, Yzak.

As a pilot, Dearka is highly skilled and specializes in long-range artillery combat, an expertise that defines his fighting style. In the Buster Gundam, he wields devastating firepower, including a 350mm gun launcher and a 94mm high-energy rifle that can be combined for even more powerful attacks. This makes him a formidable support unit from a distance, though he is vulnerable to close-combat specialists. His later mobile suits, the Gunner ZAKU Warrior and Blaze ZAKU Phantom, continue to emphasize his role as a long-range fire support specialist, though the latter also provides high mobility for more versatile combat situations.
