Description
General Jūma is a character who appears in the 1974 animated feature Mazinger Z tai Ankoku Daishōgun. He serves as a high-ranking general of the Mycenae Empire, a subterranean civilization that acts as the primary antagonistic force in the story. His most defining trait is his nightmarish and highly symbolic physical design, which was conceived as a living composite of the seven Warrior Beast armies that serve under his command.
Jūma’s body is a grotesque fusion of mechanical and organic parts. His primary head is a blue-skinned humanoid face with a goatee and a lion-like mane, but on top of this head are cat-like ears and a third eye on his forehead, representing the superhuman and beast armies. His torso features a grasshopper-like face on the abdomen, representing insects, while his right hand is a ghoul-like face, representing spectral forces. His lower body is centaur-like with long purple legs, and a pair of giant red wings extend from his sides. A crocodile-like face on his front represents reptiles, and his tail ends with a fish, representing aquatic creatures. This bizarre appearance visually establishes his authority over the entirety of the Mycenae Empire’s diverse forces.
In terms of personality, Jūma is characterized by absolute loyalty to the Great General of Darkness. He is presented as a ruthless and confident military commander who carries out his orders without hesitation. He mocks his enemies and shows great cruelty in battle, taking pleasure in tormenting those who oppose the Mycenae Empire. His primary motivation is to serve his master and destroy the empire's enemies, specifically the pilot Kōji Kabuto and his super-robot, Mazinger Z.
Within the narrative of Mazinger Z tai Ankoku Daishōgun, Jūma is summoned by the Great General of Darkness and tasked with selecting the best Warrior Beasts to hunt down and eliminate Kōji Kabuto. He leads a squadron of Warrior Beasts into battle, successfully tracking Mazinger Z to a gorge. During the ensuing fight, he and his forces overpower and severely damage Mazinger Z, leaving it impaled on a canyon wall. As Jūma prepares to deliver the final blow by throwing his battle axe, his attack is intercepted by the arrival of Tetsuya Tsurugi in Great Mazinger. The arrival of this new, more powerful robot reverses the tide of the battle. Jūma and his remaining forces are systematically destroyed by the combined efforts of the two Mazingers. In a final act of desperation, Jūma attempts to burn Great Mazinger with his fire breath, but the attack is deflected. He is then impaled by Great Mazinger's sword, held by Mazinger Z, before both robots destroy him with a simultaneous Breast of Fire attack.
Jūma’s key relationship is with his superior, the Great General of Darkness. He acts as a trusted and direct subordinate, functioning as the primary field commander for the final confrontation of the film. His development is minimal, as he appears as a singular obstacle for the heroes, a powerful villain whose defeat marks the climax of the battle before the heroes face the Great General himself.
Jūma possesses a number of notable abilities that reflect his composite nature. His primary weapon is a large battle axe, which he wields with immense physical strength, demonstrated when he effortlessly smashes Mazinger Z's Iron Cutter blades. From the reptilian face on his chest, he can breathe a powerful stream of fire. His spectral right hand is also capable of extending to strike opponents. Beyond his personal combat abilities, he holds complete tactical control over the Warrior Beast army, selecting specific units to accompany him into battle.
