Description
Barendos is a commander within the Vegan Empire who appears in the 1976 anime film UFO Robo Grendizer tai Great Mazinger. He is distinguished by his light blue skin, long pointed ears typical of his people, and yellow eyes with green pupils, often with black lines descending from them. His attire consists of a light blue and black uniform with chest armor and gloves, and he wears a helmet featuring long horns extending from the sides.

As a character, Barendos embodies a ruthless and calculating nature, standing out as one of the more cruel and manipulative figures among the Vegan forces. He is highly arrogant, believing himself capable of succeeding where others have failed, and he is not afraid to threaten his rivals, Gandal and Buraki, with demotion or death if he accomplishes his mission. His methods are defined by psychological warfare; he employs hostages and treachery without hesitation, showing a complete disregard for any code of honor. This is starkly illustrated by his past actions on Planet Fleed, where he took women and children hostage, including the siblings of Duke Fleed, only to kill them by dropping them from a great height after his demands were met.

Motivated by a desire to destroy Grendizer and conquer Earth, Barendos sees his assignment as an opportunity to prove his superiority over the other Vegan commanders. His primary role in the story is as the central antagonist who orchestrates a unique crisis by capturing Koji Kabuto and stealing the super robot Great Mazinger. After kidnapping Koji, he reads his memories to learn Grendizer's weaknesses but instead discovers the existence of Great Mazinger, which he then pilots himself to use against Duke Fleed.

His key relationships are defined by conflict and animosity. He holds a deep contempt for his fellow commanders, Gandal and Buraki, whom he openly threatens. His most personal and intense enmity is with Duke Fleed, the pilot of Grendizer, who despises Barendos for the murder of his younger siblings and the destruction of their home planet. Throughout the film, Barendos also has a significant interaction with Koji Kabuto, whom he uses as a source of information and later as a captive, inadvertently setting the stage for his own defeat.

In terms of development, Barendos remains a consistently villainous figure without a redemptive arc. His strategic cunning is demonstrated when he successfully steals Great Mazinger and uses it effectively in battle, even mastering its arsenal to put Grendizer in danger. However, his overconfidence proves to be a flaw. His defeat comes not from a direct assault but from the resourcefulness of Koji Kabuto, who escapes captivity and exploits the stolen robot's weakness to disable it, forcing Barendos to retreat to his mothership, which is subsequently destroyed.

Barendos possesses several notable abilities. He is a skilled pilot, capable of controlling the stolen Great Mazinger and using its various weapons, such as the Screw Crasher Punch and Breast Burn, against its intended ally. He also commands powerful discus-shaped saucer beasts, including the Disco Jinjin, which he uses for capture and combat. However, his most formidable weapon is his intellect and cunning, employing tactics such as mind control, hostage-taking, and psychological manipulation to gain the upper hand against his enemies.
