Description
Hiroshi Shimabukuro is a supporting character from the 1993 anime Rokudenashi Blues, serving as a major rival and eventual ally to the protagonist, Taison Maeda. He is a student at Yonekura Commercial High School in Kichijoji, where he holds the position of captain of the school's delinquent group. Due to poor academic performance, he is required to repeat his second year of high school, making him a year older than Maeda and his peers.
Shimabukuro and Maeda have an unconventional and tumultuous relationship that forms a cornerstone of the story. Their first encounter is accidental; Shimabukuro is driving without a license when his car rear-ends a vehicle carrying Maeda and his friends. This seemingly negative incident pushes their stalled car away from an oncoming train, inadvertently saving their lives. A recurring joke in the series is that their meetings often begin with an act of unintended mutual assistance, only for the two to realize each other's identity and immediately start fighting. The initial misunderstanding caused by mistaken identity cements them as enemies, though the other characters frequently observe that the pair's dynamic is so competitive they might as well be best friends.
Personality-wise, Shimabukuro is depicted as a delinquent who adheres to a personal code of justice. He is known to offer sincere apologies when he is in the wrong, assist those in distress, and express open contempt for cowardly or treacherous behavior. This strong moral compass earns him the deep trust and loyalty of his peers at Yonekura Commercial High School. Despite his formidable nature, he also has a volatile and easily provoked side; specifically, mispronouncing or distorting his name, such as calling him Tamabukuro, will send him into a fit of rage.
As a fighter, Shimabukuro is exceptionally skilled and is portrayed as being roughly equal in strength to Taison Maeda. His primary combat style is rooted in judo, which he has mastered to a high degree, having placed second in the Japanese High School Judo Finals. In their sole serious confrontation, he successfully knocks Maeda unconscious using a judo slam. He remains one of the only characters in the series whom Maeda never decisively defeats in a fight. However, his reliance on techniques that require space to maneuver, such as hip throws and sweeps, means his effectiveness is severely limited in cramped or confined spaces where he cannot build momentum.
Throughout the narrative, his character develops from a direct adversary into a recurring rival and situational ally. Although the rivalry is intense, the two later resolve their conflict in a hospital room while both are recovering from chicken pox. As the story progresses, Shimabukuro often appears to help Maeda's group during larger conflicts, even though they remain personally antagonistic. His role in major battles diminishes in later story arcs, where his function shifts from a primary boss opponent to a supporting fighter, sometimes underperforming against major antagonists due to external circumstances or location disadvantages. Nevertheless, he remains a respected figure defined by his strong judo abilities, his proud loyalty to his school, and his complex, grudging camaraderie with his greatest rival.
