Description
Professor Kaneda is the father of Shotaro Kaneda, the protagonist of Tetsujin 28, and the scientist who designed and built the giant robot Tetsujin 28. In the anime, he is connected to the Tetsujin Project, a secret Japanese military program from World War II that sought to develop giant remote-controlled war machines. He is generally presented as the leading developer who brought Tetsujin 28, the final unit of the project, to completion. The exact circumstances of his death differ across versions; in some he dies during the war, and in others he dies shortly after finishing the robot. Either way, he is not alive for most of the main story. Before his death, he entrusts the robot's remote controller to his young son, trusting that Shotaro will use the machine to protect people rather than to harm them.

His personality is that of a brilliant, serious, and highly responsible scientist. He is driven by a sincere belief that advanced technology should serve humanity, and he approaches his own creation with great caution. His relationship with his son is the emotional foundation of the narrative, since Shotaro carries on his father's work and struggles to live up to the trust placed in him. He also shares a close professional bond with Professor Shikishima, his former assistant, who survives the war, becomes Shotaro's guardian and mentor, and is portrayed as the person who understands Tetsujin 28 most deeply after Kaneda is gone.

Because he is deceased during most of the main events, Professor Kaneda does not undergo a personal arc in the usual sense. His character is instead revealed through flashbacks, records, and the memories of those who knew him, with different adaptations adding new details about his wartime research and the choices he made. Through these revelations, he emerges as a man who carries a heavy sense of responsibility for the destructive potential of his own invention and who attempts, in his final moments, to correct that mistake by placing his creation in the hands of someone he trusts.
