Description
Inspector Juzo Megure serves as a Police Inspector in Division 1 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, a position he holds with a career marked by dedication and a serious commitment to his duties. At around 41 years of age, Megure's physical presence is notable for his large build, thick mustache, and the brown hat he is never seen without. This distinctive hat is not merely a fashion choice; it conceals a scar on his head, a permanent reminder of a pivotal case early in his career. During that investigation, a serial hit-and-run case targeting schoolgirls, the young officer Megure was assigned to protect a headstrong high school volunteer named Midori. When the culprit attacked, Megure shielded her, sustaining his head injury. Midori also survived but received a scar on her forehead. The two later married, and Megure's habit of keeping his scar hidden is tied to this personal history, avoiding questions about the shared marks of their ordeal.
In the context of the story, especially as seen in the film Case Closed: The Fourteenth Target, Megure acts as the primary liaison between the amateur detectives and the official police force. He is a capable officer who relies on experience and procedural diligence, though his thinking can be somewhat conservative, which occasionally limits his flexibility in complex investigations. While he is not a super-sleuth possessing the exceptional deductive powers of Shinichi Kudo or his father, the novelist Yusaku Kudo, Megure is a competent leader who understands the value of keeping an open mind and allowing all facts to come to light. His role often involves managing the crime scene, interviewing suspects, and supervising his subordinates, including Wataru Takagi, Miwako Sato, and Ninzaburo Shiratori. He demonstrates a strong sense of justice and a remarkable tolerance for physical pain, even enduring being hit with an iron pipe while protecting a young Sonoko Suzuki, an incident which required hospitalization but showcased his bravery.
Megure’s personality is defined by a blend of stern professionalism and a hidden, kind-hearted nature. He can be prone to shouting when frustrated and has little patience for foolishness, yet he deeply cares for his team, acting as a father figure to officers like Sato, whose own father was a policeman. His relationship with former colleague Kogoro Mouri is strained, partly due to his perception that Kogoro attracts murder cases like a jinx, though he respects Kogoro's skill as a sharpshooter from their time working together. This history is a key element in The Fourteenth Target, where the attacks on those associated with Kogoro directly involve Megure. In stark contrast, he holds the young Shinichi Kudo in high regard, having consulted him on cases since Shinichi was a child accompanying his father, Yusaku. Despite his reliance on Shinichi's intellect, Megure is initially dismissive of Conan Edogawa and the Detective Boys, viewing them as nuisances until their assistance proves invaluable.
Regarding his development, Megure remains a largely static character in terms of core personality, serving as a reliable and constant representation of law enforcement. However, his relationships evolve subtly. His growing, if grudging, tolerance for Conan's presence and his eventual suspicion that the boy might be the true source of the deductions attributed to the "Sleeping Kogoro" show a slow shift in his awareness. The tragic backstory of how he met his wife provides deep motivation for his actions and his unwavering protection of others. Megure’s notable abilities lie not in masterful deduction but in his leadership, his vast experience, and his physical resilience. He is Made of Iron, as shown when he withstood a blow to the head that would incapacitate most people. He acts decisively in dangerous situations, prioritizing the safety of hostages and civilians above all else, and his moral compass is strong, sometimes leading him to directly confront culprits about the selfish nature of their crimes.
