Movie
Description
Kogoroh Mohri is a former police detective who now runs a private investigation agency from his home in Beika Town, where he lives with his daughter, Ran Mohri, and the temporarily residing Conan Edogawa. He is separated from his wife, Eri Kisaki, a high‑profile lawyer, though the divorce was never finalized. In the film The Fourteenth Target, Mohri becomes the central figure in a series of attacks that target people connected to him, each corresponding to a number from a deck of playing cards; he himself is assigned the number five. The plot revisits an incident from ten years earlier in which Mohri, while still a police officer, intentionally grazed his wife’s leg with a bullet in order to free her from a hostage situation. That event left his daughter with lingering distress and is the primary source of the emotional tension between the family members.
Personality-wise, Mohri is portrayed as lazy, often intoxicated, and prone to boasting about his detective abilities, yet his actual investigative skills are generally unimpressive when he is awake. He is easily distracted by attractive women and frequently embarrasses his daughter with his behavior. However, when the safety of his family is directly threatened, his demeanor shifts to one of seriousness and competence. His motivation in the film revolves around protecting his loved ones, particularly after he realizes that the attacks are aimed at those closest to him. He initially dismisses the danger but later takes an active role in uncovering the truth.
Key relationships include his daughter Ran, whose concern for him and her mother drives much of the emotional arc; his estranged wife Eri, whose past involvement in the hostage incident is central to the mystery; and Conan Edogawa, whose covert assistance allows the case to be solved. Mohri also maintains a professional relationship with Inspector Megure, his former colleague on the force.
Throughout the movie, Mohri shows limited development as he comes to terms with the choices he made during the hostage crisis and eventually reconciles with Ran when she understands that his actions were intended to protect her mother. His notable abilities include his expertise in judo, which he was once the university champion in, and accurate marksmanship with a handgun. Although he rarely demonstrates deductive skill on his own, in moments of personal crisis he can piece together information more effectively, though he still relies heavily on Conan’s hidden guidance.
