Description
Joe Kaisaka, also sometimes referred to as Joe Kaizaka, is the central protagonist and primary pilot of the giant robot Groizer X. A young man residing on Akane Island, Joe is a member of the Tobishima Pilot Team, an air force unit led by Professor Tobishima. His background is marked by personal loss, as he grew up as an orphan following the death of his parents. This tragedy led to his adoption by Professor Tobishima, who became a caring and principled guardian, a relationship for which Joe holds deep affection.

Joe’s personality is defined by a strong and selfless heroic nature. He is characterized as a quintessential nice guy, possessing a natural inclination to help complete strangers without expecting anything in return. This moral clarity and courage drive him to take on the immense responsibility of piloting Groizer X to defend Earth from the invading Gaira, or Gailler, aliens. His empathetic nature extends especially to children, to whom he is a friend and protector. This trait is rooted in his own experiences as an orphan, allowing him to show exceptional kindness and understanding to young people he encounters. For a younger boy named Sabu, Joe acts as a cool big brother figure, consistently supporting him and having his back.

Joe’s primary role in the story is as the main pilot of the super robot Groizer X, a powerful machine that transforms into a jet. He is considered the most skilled flier among Professor Tobishima’s team, which makes him the natural choice to take the controls of the alien robot. In this role, he forms a critical partnership with Rita, the daughter of Groizer X’s creator, who defects from the Gaira and brings the robot to Earth. Their relationship is a central pillar of the narrative, evolving into that of star-crossed lovers. Despite their deep feelings for each other, their romance is tragically complicated by the war between their respective home worlds, Earth and the Gaira planet. Together, they fight side-by-side in the cockpit, forming a formidable and emotionally resonant team.

Throughout the series, Joe navigates not only the escalating battles against alien forces but also the personal consequences of being thrust into an interplanetary conflict. His development is closely tied to his relationship with Rita, as they deal with the moral complexities of her fighting against her own people. The story concludes with a bittersweet resolution for Joe, as despite their triumph over the Gaira emperor, he and Rita are forced to separate when she is recalled to her home planet, leaving their love unfulfilled. In terms of notable abilities, Joe is recognized as an ace pilot whose exceptional skill in flying aircraft allows him to quickly adapt to and effectively command the immensely powerful and technologically advanced Groizer X in combat.
