Description
Henbe is the main character of the 1989 anime series, a mysterious creature who resembles a small, pink hippopotamus. He comes from another world, which he reaches by falling through a tunnel hidden behind a waterfall. It is during his play in this original world that he accidentally tumbles down this passage and awakens inside a closet in the house of a human child named Maruko, or occasionally Megeru, finding himself unable to return as the tunnel closes behind him. This unexpected arrival serves as his background and sets the stage for his life in the human world.

In terms of personality, Henbe is portrayed as a kind and helpful being. His gentle nature is evident in his willingness to use his magical abilities to assist those around him, particularly his new human friends. A central aspect of his character is his capacity for friendship, which becomes a powerful emotional anchor. Despite his initial desire to go back to his home world, he forms a strong bond with Maruko, and this connection is so significant that it causes him to hesitate when the opportunity to return finally presents itself. This shows a deep loyalty and attachment that overcomes his own personal longing for home.

Henbe’s primary motivation is to adapt to his new life while aiding his human companions. His role in the story is that of a magical guide and problem-solver for the children he lives with. He uses his powers not for grand adventures, but often to help in everyday situations, fulfilling the dreams and desires of those he meets. His presence is a catalyst for the series' events, as his magical interventions and the occasional opening of the portal to his world bring about various adventures and challenges for the group.

The most important relationship in Henbe’s life is with Maruko (or Megeru), the child in whose home he takes shelter. This friendship is the cornerstone of his development. Other key figures include a cast of recurring characters from both the human world and his own, such as friends named Abuko, Izumi, Memosuke, and Gorita who occasionally cross over from his original dimension when the tunnel temporarily reopens. These interactions help to flesh out the world he left behind and contrast it with his new environment.

Henbe undergoes notable development throughout the series. Initially a lost and stranded visitor, he grows to become an integrated member of the human household and community. His emotional journey is highlighted by the pivotal moment of choice: when given the chance to go home, his bond with Maruko leads him to delay or reconsider his departure. This decision marks his acceptance of the human world as his new home, at least for the time being. Eventually, his development comes full circle when he and Maruko travel back to his original world together, using his magical parasol to bridge the two realities.

Henbe possesses several notable abilities, all of which center around his magical parasol. With this umbrella, he is able to fly through the air and perform various magical feats. He also has the inherent ability to speak with animals, a skill that often aids him in his endeavors to help his human friends. Using these combined powers, he is generally able to fulfill the dreams of the people around him, making him a figure of wonder and kindness within his adopted community.
