TV-Series
Description
Gattler, sometimes known as Gattler the Rattler, is a major antagonist and a general in the service of the Outriders, the primary enemy force in the series. He operates as a high-ranking commander who answers directly to the main villain, Nemesis, making him one of the most significant threats faced by the protagonists. In appearance, Gattler wears a foreboding, fanged space mask complemented by black clothing and a flowing red cape, with a tube connected to his left chest. Beneath this mask, his true face is that of a middle-aged man with black hair, a mustache, and sideburns.
Gattler is characterized by a personality that thrives on orchestrating invasions and large-scale fights, which he pursues for his own enjoyment with little regard for the lives of others. While fiercely loyal to Nemesis and answering to no one else in the Outrider hierarchy, he is also known to harbor a degree of fear towards his master. He is notably ambitious, self-important, and prone to overestimating his own abilities. Despite his cunning and his capacity to devise strategies that cause significant trouble for the Star Sheriffs, he prefers to avoid direct confrontation unless his escape route is cut off, forcing him into a personal battle. He also has a fondness for pompous displays, often executing his plans with a large deployment of Outrider troops and heavy equipment.
The motivations driving Gattler are shared with his fellow Outriders: the desire to invade the human dimension because the concept of fun does not exist in their own realm. He crosses over into the human dimension via the Vapor Trail that Nemesis creates, where he follows orders to orchestrate the invasion of the New Frontier. There is indication that Gattler may not have always been an Outrider, as he lacks the pointed ears characteristic of their kind. At one point, he was reportedly arrested on the planet Yuma for crimes against humanity, and it was Nemesis who secured his release, leaving Gattler feeling deeply indebted. After this event, he swore to serve Nemesis and to take revenge on the Star Sheriffs.
In his role within the story, Gattler serves as one of the Star Sheriffs' most competent and dangerous recurring rivals. He is a general who orchestrates attacks on outposts and uses traps to lure his enemies. Key relationships define his actions; his loyalty to Nemesis is paramount, though it is mixed with fear and a sense of obligation. He also has a direct adversarial relationship with the Star Sheriffs, particularly with Fireball, whom he fights in a significant final confrontation. In terms of development, Gattler maintains his role as a persistent threat until a climactic battle on Planet Alamo. After he discovers a supply of the powerful substance alkalyte, he and Nemesis attempt to use it to merge the Vapor Zone with the New Frontier. During the ensuing fight, Gattler is mortally injured by Fireball and is subsequently banished back to the Vapor Zone as the plant around him crumbles.
Notable abilities belonging to Gattler are largely strategic and technological rather than personal superhuman powers. He is a cunning strategist capable of causing real trouble for the protagonists. He also commands considerable military resources, including a personal armored combat vehicle equipped with a laser cannon and rocket launchers, a personal spaceship, and a massive flying battleship simply called Gattler's Destroyer, which is larger than both the heroes' ship, Ramrod, and the Monarch Supreme.
