Description
Himawari Natsuwa is a central character in the comedy anime Wandaba Style and acts as the de facto leader of the aspiring idol group Mix Juice. Her name, Himawari, is the Japanese word for sunflower, a theme that carries through her bright and straightforward personality. She is a teenage girl with black hair, often styled with a ribbon, and black eyes, standing 158 centimeters tall. Her background is unique among her group mates, as she leads a double life; by day, she works in physical labor at a construction site, where she becomes the center of attention for many admiring workers. By night, she is a serious performer of enka, a traditional style of Japanese ballad music. This duality is reflected in her manner of speaking, as she sometimes shifts from modern Japanese to a more traditional dialect.
In terms of personality, Himawari is depicted as self-righteous and feisty, often clashing with her fellow bandmates, particularly the rock singer Yuri Fuyude. Despite her occasional arguments, she possesses a strong singing ability that is generally considered superior to the other members of Mix Juice, which helps justify her role as the group's leader. Her motivations are tied directly to the absurd premise of the series. She joins the eccentric teen genius Susumu Tsukumo's space program, not out of a passion for science, but because she dreams of performing a concert on the moon, a publicity stunt designed to catapult the struggling idol group to stardom. Throughout the story, Himawari and the other girls serve as test pilots for Susumu's bizarre, eco-friendly rocket experiments, which are known as Wandabas. These experiments frequently fail due to small details or the girls' own squabbling.
Her key relationships are primarily defined by her rivalry with Yuri and her role as a competent, if sometimes bossy, leader to the more eccentric members of the group, which includes the folk singer Ayame Akimo and the nursery singer Sakura Haruno. Regarding development, Himawari shows a strong commitment to the group's goal, even as the plans become increasingly outlandish. In one noted instance, she returns to her construction job and becomes notably stronger, showcasing her resilience and physical capability. Himawari's notable ability is her proficiency in enka singing, which sets her apart from the other pop-focused members of Mix Juice. Her physical strength, developed from her construction work, also serves as a notable trait that distinguishes her within the group.
