TV-Series
Description
Genjirō Murata, often referred to as Ajiou-sama or the Taste King, is a pivotal figure in the culinary world of Mister Ajikko. As the head of the powerful Ajiou Group, he is recognized as the leading authority on cuisine in Japan, a position he is said to have held for thirty years. He is a distinguished-looking older man, easily identified by his grey hair, beard, and mustache, and he typically dresses in traditional Japanese clothing. His discerning palate and vast experience make him the ultimate judge of culinary talent.

Genjirō first encounters the young prodigy Yōichi Ajiyoshi when he visits the boy’s family restaurant, the Hinode. Initially surprised that a child is the chef, he is deeply impressed by Yōichi’s innovative katsudon, noting not only its exquisite taste but also the advanced technique used in its preparation. Rather than simply praising the boy, Genjirō’s motivation is to seek out and nurture exceptional talent. He is not a passive observer; he actively recruits Yōichi, inviting him to the Ajiou Building to compete in a cooking match against a professional chef, thereby launching the young cook’s career.

In the story, Genjirō functions as a mentor, patron, and ultimate authority. He takes a deep personal interest in Yōichi’s development, often appearing at the boy’s cooking battles and even providing the facilities for major competitions. To discover new talent and quell rumors about his own potential retirement, he establishes the Ajiou Company Grand Prix Contest, a high-stakes tournament for young chefs. Furthermore, his organization, the Ajiou Group, is positioned in direct opposition to the antagonistic General V Group, placing Genjirō at the center of a larger conflict that shapes the series' major plotlines. His key relationship is with Yōichi, whom he sees not only as a promising talent but possibly as a future successor.

Throughout the series, Genjirō’s role remains consistent as the unflappable and powerful kingmaker. He does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, but his actions drive the story forward by constantly placing Yōichi in new and challenging situations. His most notable abilities are his supremely refined sense of taste, which allows him to instantly assess any dish, and his deep, encyclopedic knowledge of cooking techniques. While he is an accomplished chef himself, his primary power lies in his influence and his skill for recognizing and elevating genius in others.
