Description
Conan Edogawa is the childlike alias of Shinichi Kudo, a brilliant high school detective whose body was shrunk by a mysterious poison. By the time of the events in The Time Bombed Skyscraper, he has already been living with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, the bumbling private detective Kogoro Mouri, for an unspecified period. While he appears to be a normal first-grader attending Teitan Elementary School, his mind remains that of a seventeen-year-old genius. He maintains this secret identity to protect those close to him from the criminal organization that poisoned him, with only the eccentric inventor Dr. Hiroshi Agasa knowing the truth.

Shinichi Kudo, in his original form, is a confident and famously perceptive teenager known as the Great Detective of the East. As Conan, he must suppress his true personality, often pretending to be an innocent and simple-minded child to avoid suspicion. Beneath this facade, however, he retains his sharp, analytical, and somewhat cocky nature, driven by an intense passion for deduction and a deep-seated sense of justice. He is an ardent fan of Sherlock Holmes, which fuels his obsessive need to solve any mystery he encounters. While he can appear arrogant or blunt, especially towards Kogoro's incompetence, this stems from his frustration at being unable to take credit for his own work and his certainty in his logical conclusions. His greatest vulnerability is Ran Mouri. He harbors deep romantic feelings for her but cannot reveal his identity, leading to moments of visible emotional conflict.

In The Time Bombed Skyscraper, Conan's primary motivation is to protect the people of Tokyo from a mysterious bomber. The case becomes intensely personal when the criminal, the architect Teiji Moriya, issues a direct challenge to Shinichi Kudo. Conan is forced to act as the intermediary, using his voice-changing bowtie to impersonate Shinichi over the phone while physically investigating the bomb threats as a child. He is driven by the need to save innocent lives, but his focus narrows considerably when Ran becomes trapped inside the dangerous Moriya-designed skyscraper. The film explores his struggle to manage the crisis while keeping his dual identity a secret from Ran, who is simultaneously waiting for Shinichi to meet her for a movie date on his birthday.

His key relationships are central to the story's emotional core. Dr. Hiroshi Agasa serves as his confidant and technical support, providing him with the gadgets necessary to function as a secret detective. His relationship with Kogoro Mouri is one of reluctant cohabitation; Conan secretly solves the cases that make Kogoro famous as the "Sleeping Kogoro" by tranquilizing him and using his voice-changing bowtie to mimic his voice. However, his most important relationship is with Ran Mouri. She cares for Conan as a child, unaware he is her missing love, Shinichi. Throughout the film, Conan uses the voice-changing bowtie to speak to Ran as Shinichi, trying to protect her and guide her from a distance. This creates a poignant dynamic where he is physically present as a child but emotionally connected as a teenager, culminating in a scene where he is forced to guide her through defusing a bomb while separated by a collapsed wall.

The events of this film highlight several of Conan's notable abilities. His most prominent skill is his genius-level intellect and deductive reasoning, which allows him to quickly analyze the bomber's patterns, solve complex riddles, and locate hidden explosives. He is also highly resourceful and possesses a variety of gadgets invented by Dr. Agasa. He uses his voice-changing bowtie to impersonate Shinichi, Inspector Megure, and Ran's father. His power-enhancing kick shoes allow him to amplify the force of a kick, which he uses to destroy a bomb-laden remote-controlled plane by kicking a controller at it. He also relies on his solar-powered turbo skateboard for high-speed chases and navigation across the city, and his stun-gun wristwatch is used to tranquilize Kogoro. Beyond gadgets, his physical agility and soccer skills are repeatedly showcased.

In terms of personal development, The Time Bombed Skyscraper does not show Conan making significant progress toward his overarching goal of finding the Black Organization. Instead, the character arc focuses on the emotional limitations of his dual existence. He is forced to confront the helplessness of being trapped in a child's body during a life-or-death situation. The climax, where he can only instruct a panicking Ran via a broken makeshift phone line while a wall separates them, is a moment of intense vulnerability for him. His usual confidence gives way to a rare admission of fear when he tells her they will die together. His development is subtle, reinforcing his commitment to protecting Ran at all costs and highlighting the tragic irony that he is right next to her but completely unable to reveal himself. The film demonstrates that even his unparalleled intellect has limits against the chaotic and emotional nature of a real-time crisis.
