Description
Meguire, known in the original Japanese as Inspector Juzo Megure, is a supporting character in the first Case Closed feature film The Time Bombed Skyscraper. He serves as a high-ranking police inspector in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, Division 1. Meguire is a veteran officer with a stout build, a bushy mustache, and a distinctive hat that he wears at all times to conceal a scar on his head, a permanent reminder of a case that led him to meet his wife, Midori. He is a capable and dedicated investigator who takes his duties seriously, though he can be short-tempered and quick to raise his voice when things go wrong. His conservative thinking sometimes limits his ability to solve cases on his own, which is why he often relies on brilliant detectives like Shinichi Kudo, whose deductive skills he respects highly.
In the film, Meguire is first seen on the scene of the murder of wealthy heart surgeon Magnum Cornhouser, where he assists in the investigation alongside Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa. He later recalls a past case in which Shinichi Kudo helped him solve a hit-and-run accident involving a city councilman, a detail that becomes relevant to the central bombing plot. When a series of bombings targets buildings designed by the architect Professor Joel, Meguire participates in questioning the professor and coordinating the police response. He also introduces the young officer Ninzaburo Shiratori to Conan and Kogoro, marking Shiratori’s first appearance in the series. While Meguire does not always take Conan seriously—viewing him and the other children as a nuisance—he trusts the information that Conan passes along in Shinichi’s name.
Meguire’s primary motivation throughout the film is to protect the citizens of Beika City and bring the bomber to justice. He works methodically, following standard police procedures, and shows a strong sense of duty. His key relationships include a long-standing professional friendship with Kogoro Mouri, dating back to when they served together as officers, though he often grumbles about the number of murder cases that seem to follow Kogoro. He also holds Shinichi Kudo in high regard and wishes the young detective were still available to help. Meguire does not undergo significant personal development within this single film, but his role reinforces his established traits: a competent, if sometimes frustrated, inspector who relies on exceptional minds to solve the most challenging cases. His notable abilities include effective leadership of his police team and a thorough understanding of criminal investigation, but he lacks the intuitive genius of the series’ main detective.
