Movie
Description
The King of Ingary is the sovereign ruler of the kingdom seen throughout the film. In official art books for the movie, he is also referred to as the Emperor. His kingdom, Ingary, is depicted as a nation at war with a neighboring kingdom, relying heavily on steam-powered technology for its military while also employing court wizards who serve under the powerful sorceress Madame Suliman.
In the film, the King is portrayed as a somewhat oafish and unassuming leader. He appears to be largely unaware that Madame Suliman is the true power manipulating the kingdom from behind the scenes, particularly in directing the war effort and controlling the royal court. His primary motivation as a ruler is the successful prosecution of the war, for which he seeks to conscript powerful wizards, including the reluctant Howl. His role in the story is largely functional, serving as a representative of the state's authority that the protagonists must navigate. It is the King who summons Howl to the palace to serve the kingdom, an event that forces Howl to confront the demands of the war.
The King's most significant scene involves an encounter with Sophie and a disguised Howl. When the gallant king is announced, he steps off a flying kayak, but this figure is later revealed to be Howl in disguise. The real King then makes an appearance, and his entrance surprises Sophie, though Madame Suliman, who had seen through Howl's disguise, remains calm. This moment highlights the King's position as a figurehead who can be easily impersonated and who lacks the perceptiveness of the court sorceress. Unlike the extensive backstory from the novels, where he is the elder brother of Prince Justin, father of Princess Valeria, and the son of the king who originally banished the Witch of the Waste, these familial connections are not established within the events of the anime film. His character shows little development, as he remains a static representation of royal authority throughout the story, and he does not possess any notable magical abilities or special skills, relying instead on the magical prowess of wizards like Suliman and Howl to fight his war.
