Description
Dr. Katō is the father of the protagonist Yuji Katō and a central figure in the events that drive the story of Balatack. He is an acclaimed and brilliant scientist whose primary field of expertise is space engineering, though his most groundbreaking work lies in theoretical physics. His research focuses on the Time Wrinkle theorem, a complex theory that holds the key to developing a fully functional time machine, an invention with the potential to change the course of history.

At the start of the narrative, Dr. Katō is portrayed as a dedicated researcher who has reached a significant milestone, having completed the project for his time machine. His genius attracts attention from beyond Earth, specifically from the planet Epsilon. The president of Planet Epsilon, Shaideen, seeks a peaceful collaboration with Dr. Katō to develop the Time Wrinkle theorem for the advancement of interplanetary travel. However, this alliance is sabotaged by Commander Goldeus, the leader of the Shaizack army sent to retrieve the doctor. Goldeus disobeys his president's orders, and upon arriving on Earth, he kidnaps Dr. Katō's wife and older son. He also steals the doctor's invention, intending to use it for his own hostile purposes to conquer Earth.

This act of aggression marks a turning point in Dr. Katō's life. Rather than succumbing to despair or cooperating with the enemy, he channels his grief and determination into a plan for resistance. He is not a passive victim; he becomes the strategic architect of the counterattack against Goldeus. On a mountain, he establishes a highly sophisticated scientific base that serves as the headquarters for the resistance. This facility is equipped with advanced security systems and serves as the launch point for the team that will operate the giant super robot, Balatack. Dr. Katō is the creator of the titular robot Balatack, building it as a weapon to fight the alien forces and, more personally, to rescue his captured family. The robot is designed to be modular, with the ability to transform into different configurations such as a tank or a drill unit for various combat situations.

His most crucial role is as the founder and commander of the Balatack Team. He assembles five gifted young people, including his own son Yuji, to pilot the robot. Each of these five members possesses unique extrasensory perception (ESP) powers, such as telepathy, telekinesis, and precognition, which are necessary to control the robot. Dr. Katō’s relationship with his son, Yuji, is a key dynamic. While Yuji is a headstrong and impulsive American football player driven by a burning rage to save his mother and brother, his father serves as a firm and authoritative leader. In one notable instance, when Yuji abandons the team to search for his family on his own, which critically weakens Balatack and endangers their mission, it is Dr. Katō who sternly reprimands him and orders him to return to his post, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and discipline over individual heroics.

Throughout the series, Dr. Katō’s character is defined by his resilience and strategic mind. He does not personally pilot a mech or engage in direct combat; his power lies in his intellect, his scientific knowledge, and his ability to lead from behind the scenes. His personality is that of a serious, dedicated, and resourceful scientist and father. While his primary motivation is the safety of his family—his wife and older son who remain hostages—he evolves to take on the larger responsibility of defending the Earth from Goldeus's invasion. His actions consistently demonstrate the value of sacrifice, humility, and collaboration, teaching the young members of the Balatack team that their strength lies in unity. He is the mastermind whose creation, the robot Balatack, and whose leadership provide the means for the five young heroes to fight back against the reptile army of Goldeus.
