Description
Graham Hoyrie is a former whale hunter of considerable skill who appears as a central figure in the Macross Dynamite 7 story. Once a family man, Graham was married to a well-known singer named Maria, with whom he would hunt galactic whales while she sang to the majestic creatures. This life came to a tragic end when Maria lost her life in an accident during an encounter with a legendary great white galactic whale, an event that also cost Graham his right arm.

Consumed by grief and a thirst for vengeance, Graham became a man singularly obsessed. He abandoned his previous life as a hunter and dedicated himself entirely to hunting down and killing the great white whale he holds responsible for his wife's death and his own maiming. This obsessive quest defines his personality, rendering him a taciturn and boorish individual who neglects all other aspects of his existence, including his family. His fixation on the white whale is so all-consuming that his eldest daughter, Liza, eventually leaves home, deeply disappointed by her father's abandonment of his household duties. In contrast, his younger daughter, Elma, still cares for him, though she is troubled by his path.

Graham's role in the story is that of a man driven to the edge by loss, a parallel to the classic literary figure of Captain Ahab from Moby-Dick. To pursue his quarry on more equal terms, he has undergone macronization, using Zentradi technology to enlarge his body to gigantic proportions. He fights in space while wearing a self-made, minimalist spacesuit and riding a catcher board, opting for this near-naked approach because complex mechanical equipment like a Variable Fighter would be disrupted and rendered inoperable by the unique properties of the galactic whales. His physical prowess and skill as a hunter are formidable, honed through years of dangerous encounters.

The arrival of the wandering musician Nekki Basara serves as the catalyst for Graham's development. Basara, who seeks to communicate with the whales through his song, reminds Graham of his late wife and her own musical efforts. Early in their acquaintance, a small but significant gesture reveals the humanity beneath Graham's hardened exterior: he gives Basara a new guitar string when one breaks and even offers him a whisker from a galactic whale. Through Basara's unwavering belief in the power of song, it is suggested that Graham’s quest was not purely about revenge but was also a subconscious search for a place to die. In the final conflict, inspired by Basara, Graham abandons his vendetta to protect both the galactic whales and the singer, ramming his own craft into a pirate ship. By the end, when told the whales may not return to the planet Zola, Graham responds that he will simply follow them, having changed profoundly from the bitter, vengeful hunter he once was.
