Description
Freia is a character from the anime Harlock Saga, presented as a goddess residing in Valhalla. She bears a striking physical resemblance to Miime, the enigmatic navigator of Captain Harlock's ship, the Arcadia. However, unlike Miime, who is a Nibelungen, Freia is identified as a goddess of Valhalla. She was raised alongside Miime in a forest on Valhalla, and both were trained under the orders of the god Wotan to learn how to use a magical organ with the power to control the flow of time.
In the story, Freia is promised to the giant brothers of Riesenheim, who are tasked with building a defense fortress for Valhalla. Their agreement to perform this work is conditioned on them being allowed to touch her skin. This encounter leaves Freia in a state of shock, and the narrative implies a deeply traumatic event. Her role in the plot becomes more prominent when she meets Tochiro Oyama, a crew member of the Arcadia who becomes lost on the planet Valhalla. She explains to him the nature of the time organ, revealing that time emanates from the organ and accelerates as it moves away from its source. Because the planet Valhalla is close to this source, time there moves much slower than in the distant solar system. She also explains the danger posed by Alberich's ring, forged from the Rhine Gold, which has the power to block this temporal wave, causing time to flow normally in Valhalla and making the gods age and become mortal. This chain of events threatens to destabilize and potentially destroy the entire universe.
Freia's key relationships are with Miime, her childhood companion and fellow trainee, and with the giant brothers, who are drawn to her. Despite her trauma at the hands of the giants, the narrative later attempts to frame their actions within a broader theme of self-interest. She does not possess combat abilities in the traditional sense, but her primary function and power lie in her training to play the time organ. This ability makes her a significant figure in the cosmic conflict, as the control of time is central to the survival of the gods and the universe itself.
