Description
Inspecteur Nitta is a police detective who becomes embroiled in the complex criminal underworld surrounding the assassin known as Freeman. His background is that of a law enforcement officer, but his actions throughout the story reveal a man whose loyalties are deeply compromised. While he maintains the outward title and position of a policeman, he secretly also serves as an executive officer within the Kumaga Church, a criminal organization with ambitions to overthrow the government. This dual allegiance immediately disqualifies him from being a standard representative of justice, as he is fully aware of the church's seditious goals yet chooses to remain an active part of its leadership.
In terms of personality, Nitta comes across as a character driven by self-serving motives rather than a sense of duty. He appears proud of his position within both the police force and the criminal church, suggesting a man who values power and status over integrity. His motivations are not rooted in upholding the law but in advancing his own standing and perhaps surviving the dangerous world he inhabits. There is little indication of guilt or internal conflict regarding his betrayal of his police oath; instead, he seems to embrace his corrupt path with a certain arrogance.
Nitta's primary role in the narrative is as an antagonist who interacts with both the authorities and the criminals. He is first seen as part of the police effort to capture Freeman and is involved in interrogating a key witness named Emu O'Hara, whom the police hope to use as bait. He shares a significant relationship with a character named Kimie, who is also his partner in the pursuit of Freeman. This relationship takes a violent turn when Kimie stabs Nitta in the chest during a chase, an act that nearly kills him and forces him to abandon the pursuit. His connection to Freeman is naturally one of hunter and hunted, though his later alliance with the Kumaga Church transforms their conflict into a struggle between rival criminal forces.
Nitta undergoes a notable but downward development. His character arc moves from his initial role as a detective to a fully compromised figure who is a de facto criminal executive. This descent culminates in a final confrontation where his skills and schemes ultimately fail him. In the end, he is outmaneuvered by Freeman. During their final clash at the headquarters of an organization known as the Bai Ba Long, Nitta attempts to take a hostage by using a pistol, but his eyes are pierced by the fingers of a character named Peashan, rendering him blind. After being blinded, he is taken to the bottom of a valley and falls to his death, meeting a grim end while his enemies look on.
Regarding notable abilities, Nitta is depicted as a capable police officer who is proficient with a standard issue firearm, which he uses in his pursuit of criminals and later while trying to take a hostage. However, his abilities are not extraordinary; he is consistently outmatched by the more skilled assassins and fighters he opposes. His ultimate weakness lies not in a lack of physical or investigative skill, but in his compromised morals and the treacherous nature of his double life, which leads directly to his downfall.
