Description
Christopher "Chris" Peeper is the main protagonist of the anime series Superbook, originally known as Sho Asuka in the Japanese version. He is a young boy, recognizable by his black spiky hair and dark brown eyes, who typically wears a blue jacket over a yellow undershirt, blue pants with dark knee patches, and black shoes. By the second season, which takes place two years after the first, he has grown noticeably taller.
In terms of background, Chris is the son of Professor Fred Peeper, an eccentric and somewhat absent-minded archaeologist. The central adventure begins when Chris is tasked with cleaning the attic. While doing so with his best friend and neighbor, Joy, he discovers a mysterious, old Bible that can speak and transport people through time. This artifact is the Superbook, and its discovery serves as the catalyst for the journeys that define Chris's role in the story.
When initially described, Chris's personality is marked by a noticeable laziness, especially regarding schoolwork and household chores, which often leads to conflicts with his father. He can be somewhat selfish and occasionally goes to ridiculous extremes to avoid his responsibilities. However, this attitude is not static. The core of his character development lies in his gradual transformation through direct exposure to biblical stories. By witnessing these events and the moral lessons within them firsthand, his perspective begins to shift, and he slowly becomes a more responsible and improved individual.
Chris's key relationships are central to the narrative. His bond with Joy is a dynamic one; she is more conscientious and hardworking, and while they tease each other, there are hints of deeper affection, with Joy occasionally showing jealousy when Chris admires other female figures. Another vital relationship is with his toy robot, Gizmo, which is brought to life by the Superbook's power during their time-traveling adventures, providing comic relief and companionship. In the second season, Chris's role shifts as the Superbook's powers are transferred to a computer. When his dog, Ruffles, is accidentally lost in time, Chris mostly remains in the present, operating the computer system to guide his cousin, Uriah "Uri" Peeper, and a new, life-sized Gizmo as they search for her. As for abilities beyond time travel, Chris does not possess supernatural powers. His notable capabilities are his first-hand experiences with the Superbook, which drive his personal growth, and his developing resourcefulness in managing the computerized time-travel system and its consequences in the second season.
