Description
Christopher "Chris" Peeper is the main protagonist of the classic anime series. Originally known as Sho Asuka in the Japanese version, Chris is an ordinary boy who becomes the central figure in a series of extraordinary adventures through biblical history. He is the son of Professor Fred Peeper, an archaeologist, and his wife Phoebe Peeper.

Physically, Chris is recognized by his black, spiky hair, black eyebrows, and dark brown eyes. His typical outfit consists of a blue jacket worn over a yellow undershirt, paired with blue pants that have dark blue patches on the knees. He completes this look with a black belt featuring a red buckle, light yellow socks, and black shoes. In the second season, which takes place two years after the events of the first, Chris is depicted as having grown taller.

In terms of personality, Chris is initially portrayed as a fun-loving but somewhat lazy boy who strongly dislikes school and household chores. He frequently attempts to avoid homework and duties, sometimes resorting to ridiculous extremes, which often puts him at odds with his father. Despite these flaws, he is generally kind-hearted at his core, and his repeated adventures through time gradually help improve his attitude and sense of responsibility.

Chris's entire journey begins when he and his next-door neighbor and best friend, Joy, are cleaning his family's attic. During this chore, they discover a mysterious, dusty Bible that can speak and is called Superbook. This magical artifact transports the children, along with Chris's clockwork toy robot Gizmo, directly into the events of the Old and New Testaments. Chris's primary motivation throughout the first season is not a grand quest, but rather the personal growth he undergoes by witnessing these biblical stories firsthand, learning moral and spiritual lessons from each experience.

The most important relationship in Chris's life is with Joy. They are best friends and neighbors, though their dynamic is complex. While Chris is often oblivious, Joy is more conscientious and frequently becomes annoyed when Chris teases her or shirks his responsibilities. It is strongly hinted that Joy has romantic feelings for Chris, as she shows noticeable jealousy whenever he admires beautiful women from biblical history, such as Eve or Rebekah. In the second season, the English narration explicitly refers to Joy as Chris's girlfriend. Another key figure is Gizmo, Chris's toy robot. In the first season, Gizmo grows to full size and becomes active only when transported back in time, often serving as comic relief with his well-intentioned but clumsy attempts to help.

Chris undergoes a notable shift in his role from the first season to the second. In the first season, he is an active participant, traveling through time to witness Bible stories directly. The first season concludes with a hint toward future change, as Chris's mother announces she is pregnant. In the second season, after Superbook accidentally falls onto a computer and transfers its powers to the machine, Chris's dog Ruffles is pulled into a biblical timeline. This event changes Chris's role from a time traveler into a support guide. He primarily stays in the present, monitoring the computer to track his younger cousin, Uri, and the now fully operational, life-sized Gizmo as they search for Ruffles. During this time, Chris is responsible for devising excuses to explain Uri's long absences to the adults at home.

Chris's most notable ability is not a superpower, but his direct access to the Superbook itself, which allows him and his friends to be transported to different eras. Initially, he is a reluctant student who dislikes academic work, so his experiences serve as practical, experiential education that changes his character. His defining trait is his capacity for growth, learning important values like responsibility, courage, and hard work directly from the historical and religious figures he meets.
