Description
Megumi Reinard is a 17-year-old crew member aboard the battleship Nadesico, serving as the ship's communications officer. Before joining the crew, she was a professional voice actress for anime and animated commercials, and she also trained as a nurse, having graduated from a nursing high school. Her experience as a performer gives her a beautiful and distinctive voice, which is a key asset in her role managing the ship's internal and external communications.

In terms of personality, Megumi is generally presented as cute, perky, and surprisingly forward and bold for her age. She is blunt and not afraid to speak her mind, nor is she shy about letting others know how she feels. She has a strong distaste for war and the killing it entails, a sentiment that initially helps her bond with Akito Tenkawa, a young man who wants to be a chef rather than a soldier.

Megumi's primary motivation in the early part of her journey is a desire for a normal, honest relationship, and she pursues this by actively seeking Akito's affection. This places her as a direct romantic rival to the captain, Yurika Misumaru, and she engages in a fierce but often playful rivalry with her for Akito's attention. Megumi is not one to give up easily and will fight for what she wants, going so far as to kiss Akito, becoming his first official girlfriend early in the series.

Her role in the story evolves significantly as the narrative becomes more serious. The difference in her core values and Akito's leads to a major rift when he decides to continue fighting, a path she cannot support. This disillusionment causes her to distance herself from him. Later, her past as a voice actress comes back to the forefront when she is forced to perform voice work for a propaganda anime, which causes her great distress and makes her question her freedom. Ultimately, she is rescued by her fellow crew members and returns to her duties on the Nadesico.

Key relationships define much of her development. Her connection with Akito is central, beginning as a romance and souring as their worldviews clash. Her rivalry with Yurika is a major source of comedic conflict. She also shares a supportive friendship with the operations officer, Ruri Hoshino, and the genius computer Omoikane, who help her in her time of need.

Regarding abilities, beyond her exceptional skills as a communications officer, Megumi holds a pilot's license. Her unique talent lies in her ability to synthesize vast amounts of sensor data and information and translate it into clear, well-timed verbal reports, acting as a human bridge between the ship's crew and its powerful computer systems.
