Description
Megumi Reinald is a former voice actress who serves as the communications officer aboard the battleship Nadesico. At seventeen years old, she was recruited by the Nergal Heavy Industries corporation for the ship's project, setting aside her career in voice acting to take on this new role. Before her time in entertainment, she trained as a nurse and had already graduated from a nursing high school, reflecting the series' setting where young people are often treated as adults earlier than in contemporary society.
In terms of appearance, Megumi is a petite young woman with a slight build, violet hair, and blue eyes, with faint freckles on her face. Her most distinctive asset is her beautiful and trained voice, a skill carried over from her previous career that makes her exceptionally suited for managing the ship's communications systems. Her talents extend beyond voice work, as she also holds a pilot's license.
Megumi possesses a personality that is notably perky, blunt, and forward. She is passionate and not someone who gives up easily, particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. One of her primary personal goals is to find a boyfriend who is honest, sincere, and dedicated to a purpose. Like the protagonist Akito Tenkawa, she has a deep-seated aversion to war and killing, which forms a significant basis for their initial connection. This shared perspective initially makes them natural allies aboard a warship, as they both question the endless cycle of violence and loss, a feeling that is intensified after she witnesses the destruction of a space colony and its crew.
Her role within the story is heavily defined by her personal relationships, particularly her romantic interest in Akito Tenkawa. Megumi becomes the primary rival to the ship's captain, Yurika Misumaru, for Akito's affection. Unlike the often-oblivious captain, Megumi is proactive and bold in her pursuit. She shares a kiss with Akito and is considered his first official girlfriend early in the series. This dynamic fuels much of the early lighthearted romantic comedy within the show, with Megumi and Yurika engaging in a fierce, unspoken competition for Akito's attention while the young cook often finds himself caught in the middle.
However, Megumi undergoes a significant character development as the series' tone shifts towards a more serious and somber direction. Her relationship with Akito begins to fracture when his commitment to fighting and protecting his own sense of justice overrides their shared desire to avoid conflict. Disillusioned by his choice and the escalating war, Megumi's feelings change, and she ultimately breaks away from him. As her personal importance in the main romantic plot diminishes, her role in the story becomes less prominent during the latter half of the television series. She finds herself entangled in the larger corporate conspiracies surrounding Nergal, and at one point, she tries to flee from the company's surveillance before being rescued and allowed to return to the Nadesico crew alongside her fellow members.
