TV-Series
Description
Inez Fressange is a tall, blonde woman who serves as a key scientific expert aboard the battleship Nadesico. She is primarily known for her immense intelligence and her role as the ship's de facto explainer of complex phenomena. Her personality is that of a calm and collected scientist, often appearing seemingly from nowhere to provide the crew with crucial information about the events unfolding around them. This habit has earned her a reputation as a living exposition device, though her contributions to the plot go far beyond simple explanation.

In terms of background, Inez is a researcher who worked for the Nergal corporation and was instrumental in designing the Nadesico's propulsion systems. These systems were based on ancient technological designs that had been uncovered on Mars. When the Jovian forces conquered Mars, she was among a handful of survivors hiding underground. She came aboard the Nadesico during a rescue mission to argue that the other colonists refused to leave on the ship, believing it had no chance of escaping the Jovian defense perimeter. A sudden Jovian counterattack tragically killed all the other survivors, forcing the Nadesico to retreat with Inez as the sole living person to escape Mars after it fell.

Her motivations are driven by a profound scientific curiosity and a deep-seated personal history. As a scientist, she is determined to understand the ancient technology of the civilization that once lived on Mars, particularly the principles behind the Boson Jump, a form of instantaneous teleportation. Her personal motivation is tied to the protagonist, Akito Tenkawa. It is eventually revealed that Inez is actually the adult version of a young girl named Ai, whom Akito tried to save during the initial attack on Mars. Akito gave her an orange, and she was caught in the same Boson Jump that sent him to Earth. However, unlike Akito, the young Ai was lost in time, sent back to the era of the ancient Martian civilization. There, the ancients gave her a plate to deliver to her older self and sent her forward in time again, ultimately arriving in the Martian desert approximately twenty years before the start of the series, where she was found and raised with no memory of her past.

Throughout the story, Inez serves as a vital source of analysis and strategic support for the Nadesico crew. She is the creator and host of the in-universe educational segments titled Naze Nani Nadesico, which are designed to explain the ship's technology and the nature of their enemies to the audience and the characters themselves. Her key relationships include a professional friendship with Akito Tenkawa, whom she watches with special interest due to his connection to her forgotten past. This interest sometimes puts her at odds with the ship's captain, Yurika Misumaru, who is romantically interested in Akito.

Inez undergoes significant development as the series reaches its climax. Her mysterious past is fully uncovered, and she finally remembers that she was Ai. This revelation makes her crucial to solving the mystery of the Boson Jump, which she theorizes is not just a jump through space, but also a jump through time. Using her knowledge, she helps devise a method to control the Boson Jump, and she experiences a poignant reunion with Akito, who remembers the little girl he tried to save.

Her notable abilities are primarily intellectual. She possesses a genius-level understanding of physics and the ancient Martian technology. She is also a gifted mental counselor, providing psychological support to the crew. Ultimately, her understanding of the Boson Jump becomes so profound that she can act as a medium to initiate the jump herself, proving that her capabilities extend beyond theoretical knowledge into practical application.
