Description
Kinoshita is a student at Inaho Junior High and a member of the school's boys' ping pong club. He is widely recognized as one of the two quintessential pretty boys in the club, the other being his teammate Izawa. Kinoshita has shoulder-length hair and is considered the most popular and cool guy in the entire school, which results in him being constantly pursued by female students. This popularity is a key aspect of his identity, setting him apart from several of his teammates who are branded as losers or deviants. His composed and relaxed demeanor likely contributes to this widespread admiration.
Within the dysfunctional club, which struggles to maintain its status and practice room, Kinoshita occupies the role of the handsome and level-headed member. He is contrasted with the more eccentric and perverse personalities of other members like Maeno and Izawa, who are known for their crazed antics. Despite his popularity and cool exterior, he is not immune to the club's bizarre situations. In one notable incident, his teammates Maeno and Izawa manipulate his appearance by dressing him as a woman, which leads to another club member, Tanaka, pursuing him. This event highlights how Kinoshita, despite his cool persona, becomes entangled in the chaotic and lewd humor that defines the club's activities. The team, including Kinoshita, must occasionally work together despite their differences, particularly when facing external threats to their club or when motivated by the club's strict manager, Kyōko Iwashita.
Kinoshita is also a key figure in the club's limited romantic subplots. A shy transfer student named Chiyoko Kamiya develops romantic feelings for him and joins the ping pong club specifically to attract his attention. This demonstrates his magnetism and the significant impact of his handsome appearance and cool reputation on the school's female population. While he is not described as being an exceptionally skilled or dedicated ping pong player compared to his peers in other sports anime, his primary function within the story of The Ping Pong Club is to serve as the attractive and composed straight man, whose presence contrasts sharply with and is often disrupted by the deviant and comedic behavior of his teammates.
